Question:
Both of my ankles and lower legs swell by evening every night.

I have never had a problem with swelling--I am 4 months post op in the last 3 weeks my ankles and lower legs are swollen by evening--last night they were huge. In the mornings they have gone back to normal---anyone else have this problem?    — Marie R. (posted on February 15, 2003)

How far out are you? How much protein supplement do you take? When were your last labs? Are you keeping copies of them and comparing one to another?

Do you work at a job where you stand all day? You should make an appointment ASAP to see your pcp to see if you need to be on a diruretic (water pill), or for sure just what is causing this and get it taken care of ASAP. If possable you need to set down and get your feet elivated during the day so the blood can get back up to your heart.

Call your surgeon RIGHT NOW, it may be serious. Heart troubles and blood colots can have this symptom. Dont mess around call your surgeon right now. They should have someone on call 24 / 7 Let us know what happens.

I agree with the poster who told you to call your Dr. especially if the swelling is equal bilateraly, could be a sign of thrombosis (clotting), which is dangerous, could just be that you need a diuretic, or a clood thinner, could be that you just need to kick your feet up either way would be nice to know.

I had this problem before my surgery. I am taking a diaretic. It is important to have a kidney profile done. Keep copies of all of your labs and compare them. Keep your feet up. Exercise also has helped me. Like others have said, see your doctor.
