Question:
I met with the dietician but she was more knowledgeable re:

proximal post-op diets. I am under the impression from other distals and my surgeon that milk will be a problem and yet when she was reviewing the post op diet it contained strained cream soups, diet SF puddings, skim milk and yogurts. Won't the milk certainly by itself and contained in the pudding be a problem? If so, what substitutes should I request in the hospital and what should I be planning for at home. Also, one last thought-----when is it suggested to begin my protein shakes? I know I will need at least 2/day to get in the necessary protein being distal and want to begin them as soon as I should.    — Joanne M. (posted on January 29, 2003)

Milk may or may not be a problem post-op. Some become lactose intolerant after surgery and some do not. Milk also has a certain amount of natural sugar in it and can cause some to dump. As far as protein drinks, I think you should start them as soon as possible. I couldn't handle the shakes early post-op (too sweet for me) but did find koolaid type protein drinks that I watered down even further and sipped on all day. The ones I had were Isopure Zero Carb but I know there are other brands out there.
