Question:
Has anyone been denied by Cigna open access and then won on appeal?
I was denied this week by Cigna Open Access. They said that I had not been at a BMI of over 40 for a year or more and I am not between 35 - 40 with co morbidities. I do not have co morbidities, but I will if I don't get this surgery. I weigh about 2 lbs. more now than I did a year ago, so how can they say that I have not been at this BMI for a year? Has anyone had this problem with Cigna and had a successful appeal? Please let me know your story if you had. Thanks!!! — S W. (posted on January 18, 2003)

I had CIGNA and had no problems. I'm really surprised that they did that.
I was approved over the phone and they didn't even ask me my BMI. Provide
them with information regarding the diets you've been on for the past 5 or
so years. Try to provide them a starting weight and ending weight. Maybe
they'll approve it. Ask them what else they will need to get the surgery
approved. Work with your doctor on this, too. Good luck!
