Question:
Seeking Those With 70+ BMI

I was hoping folks with at 70+ BMI could let me know if they are having surgery or had it and your story long or short. I am worried that I will have alot more problams than others.Has anyone not have a long stay in the hospital? One more thing, can my husband stay as long as he wants?    — katfish (posted on December 7, 2002)

Hi...I started out at a BMI of 73.5 (427 lbs - 5'4") and at this point, I am at a BMI of 52.5 (305 lbs) after my RNY on 7/17. Please refer to my profile for my "story". I haven't any post-op problems whatsoever (knock on wood *G*). I was operated on a Wednesday and discharged the following Monday (I had an open RNY). As far as your husband staying, you would have to talk to the hospital about that. If you have a private room, it may be possible...JR

My BMI was 90. (5'6"-494 pounds day of surgery, but I had been as high as 530. Check my profile. I had a duodenal switch (DS) with absolutely no problems. I give credit for that to my surgeon who is a perfectionist. He made certain that any possible complications were minimized. I was in and out in 5 days and had no adverse reactions to the surgery. Good Luck to you...

Hi - My BMI was 75 when I had the surgery on Aug.15, 2001. I've lost 244 pounds since that day and I've NEVER felt better. I went into the hospital on a Wed. morning and was home by that Friday evening. By the way, I had a RNY distal and I'm still losing. My hope is to have lost 250 by either Christmas or the end of the year. The hospital stay wasn't bad at all and really neither was the recovery. It's definitely the best thing I've ever done for myself. As for your husband staying, I wouldn't know. All hospitals are different when it comes to the rules and how lax they are willing to be. Good luck in your surgery! It will take you into a whole new world.

I am still a pre-op, but I totally understand your concerns as I have a feeling too starting out at a high weight that I will have complications too...might be unfounded, but the feeling is there. I have a BMI of 71 and am 5'8" tall. I too am only seeking the Duodenal Switch as this is the best procedure in my mind for me and my lifestyle. I was recently approved for Medicaid, so I am on a search to find a surgeon in the US who accepts it, since none in Michigan do. But I am also weighing my options of going to Spain and seeking surgery there with Dr. Baltasar who is an excellent surgeon. Please feel free to email me any time if you want to talk or you should check out the Yahoo Group - WLS400plus. This group is a wonderful support system and truly understands what it is to be our size since we do have different experiences and problems that our smaller sisters and brothers do not have. As for the hospital questions...I really dont know the answer. I would assume it all depends on hospital policy. I believe though that the general stay is about 4-5 days for Open procedures and about 3 for Lap.

Here is a link to Petes profile. His profile also has a link into his website. He started out with a BMI of 112 and is one of the most inspirational people I have ever met. He also knows several other people that started out with the higher BMI's. I hope this helps. http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/profile.phtml?N=H982614091

Kathy Hi, on January 11th of this year my BMI was 72.6 I weighed in at 410, I stand 5 feet 3 inches tall. Today my BMI is 41.3 and I weigh in at 233. Everyone has different kinds of problems and some have none. I have been very lucky and had none so far. It has been pretty boring for me, but I love me and my life for the first time in so long. As for your husband staying, you might want to ask where you are having your surgery, they may or may not have rules. I wish you the best of luck, this is the best gift you will ever give yourself. If you have any question please email me.

Hi Kathy, My BMI was about 90. I weighed 490 the day of surgery. I had a hard time recovering from surgery because I was so heavy. I was in the hospital for 6 days and then in a rehabilitation hospital for 7 days. I got an infection in my incision which still needs to be packed twice a day. My surgery was on Oct 11. My surgery was part lap and part open because of my severe weight. I am much better now, but it was a lot harder then i expected. You can read the whole story on here, under Lori Myers. E-mail me any time if you have questions. I have lost 57lbs so far. Good luck!!

I weighed 521pds and had a BMI of 74.2 the day of my surgery. I went in on a Monday morning and was home Thursday afternoon. I haven't hade any complications from the surgery other than a resh from sitting in the hospital bed for too long at the hospital and at home but that is clearing up. No hernias, No infection, Nothing. I was worried that they would not be able to close me up because of my size but I don't even have staples. Just a small thin line from the bottom of my breastbone to the top of my belly button. I lost 40 pds my first 2 weeks. My wife was able to stay with me, the whole time. The hospital even brought her meals, but it is eeach indidual hospital that sets that policy, check with the hospital you are gonna be staying at. If you have any questions email me and I will answer anything, we are almost alike in BMI. Good Luck you'll do great.

Hi there Kathy! Now my BMI was only about 61 but as far as the hosptial stay...my hospital was great. My hubby, Mom and niece all stayed as long as they wanted to, no one ever told them it was time to leave. One night my niece even spent the night! (couldn't find someone to watch her that day) At first I was worried about it, but later on one of the nurses came to give me a med and saw her laying down on the loveseat and said to me "Did she want dinner too, does she need a pillow or some extra blankets?" I was surprised but very grateful that they said nothing about her staying with me. You should ask about the hospital rules, my hubby even brought one of kitties to visit me as well! Vi
