Question:
why cant I eat certain things
Bread, some fish, peanut butter, mac and cheese all have made me vomit. It feels like its sitting in my throat and bubbling and I know I have to go to the restroom and vomit it up before I will feel better. Is there something wrong? I can eat soup, jello, protein shakes, cheetos, cream of wheat diet sprite, popsicles with no problem. I am almost 6 weeks out. I still have my gallbladder. Any suggestions or will this get better with time and I will be able to eat normally some day. Thanks1 — Gina P. (posted on November 13, 2002)

I threw up my first 3 mths all the time on lots of things. Now I never do.
I dont know why. But I just couldnt handle some foods. Now I dont even dump
on sugar or fat as long as I eat very small amounts. I would think if you
never had any trouble with your gallbladder it would be too soon for it to
be going bad now. Usually after loosing large amounts of weight stones may
develop but you havent lost much yet. Unless your gallbladder was on its
way to having problems and now the surgery brought it on, I dont know. But
I did vomit almost daily for 3 mths.

Yes, it will get better with time. A lot of people have trouble with pasta
and bread early on as it sits like a lump in your pouch. Macaroni and
cheese and peanut butter also contain a lot of fat which may be what's
causing you trouble. I'm 15 months post-op and still dump on high fat
foods. You'll find it is just a trial and error period for the first few
months. Once your pouch heals and your body adjusts you'll be better able
to handle certain foos again.

i am 11 mos post op, down 110 lbs & still have an intolerance to some
foods. i can only eat 2 or 3 pieces of ziti or rotelle, velvetta shells
& cheese r too heavy for me & i cant eat ANY beef at all. i have
had a problem with beef right from the beginning. it does not matter if its
ground, cut up into 1/4" pieces, made into a meatloaf or slow cooked
until it literally falls apart. i have decided that a much loved
cheeseburger smothered in steamed onions is definitely NOT worth getting
sick over. by the way...i cant eat fried foods either anymore. in view of
all this, i am eating healthier now than i ever have in my life because all
i eat is fish, seafood & cheese.

Gina, it does get better with time. Its trial and error at this point. If
a food disagrees with you, put it aside for a few more weeks and try again.
The things that you cannot tolerate now will probably be part of your menu
in the future. Salmon was a toughie for me early on. Now I eat it about
once a week.
