Question:
I'm almost 4 weeks post op and I haven't lost any weight in 10 days!
I thought that I was doing pretty good...I had lost 25lbs. in 2 3/4 wks. then bam....I haven't lost any more weight in the past 10 days. Is this normal? I'm following the liquid diet...but I'm sure I'm not getting in all of my water or liquids. (could this me the problem?) Help. — Susan B. (posted on October 28, 2002)

I don't have an answer for you, but can't wait to see answers. I'm in the
same boat! 4 weeks out I have lost 27 pounds, but NOTHING in the last 10
day's. WLS pro's what is up with this?

Hi! I'm currently 2 months post-op but at 3 weeks...my weight loss came to
a stand still for about 3 weeks. I was told by many that an early plateau
is very common due to your body recovering and getting used to your new
eating. My surgeon had said that most that hit the early plateau generally
do not hit the 3 month plateau. So, at least there's something to possibly
look forward to! LOL. Anywho! I wouldn't be worried, your doing great and
the weight will come off again. Good luck!!

I have to agree with Christie. I hit the early plateau then lost steadily
until I hit my top goal. The last 15 pounds came off slowly, but that was
my own fault (darn carbs! :) Don't lose faith. Keep track of your
measurements as well as your weight. I'll bet you are losing inches even if
you aren't losing pounds. When I came off my early plateau I went down two
sizes overnight!

Boy was I ever in this boat and I wanted out - ha! I lost 27 lbs. my first
3 weeks and then hit a plateau for 3 weeks, I was so discouraged that my
2nd month I only lost 11 lbs. compared to so many others that lost 20 lbs.
the 1st and 2nd month, then the third month I only lost 9 lbs! I only had
a big loss the first month and have hit more than 1 plateau, losing kinda
slow compared to some others, but don't get discouraged it does come off :)
I'm 8 months post-op today and down 78 lbs, I was hoping to hit the big 80
by today, well maybe somehow I'll lose another 2 lbs. today - ha! Just do
what the surgeon tells you and it will come, all our bodies are different

Susan,
I've said this before and I'll say it again. Stay off the scales! I
weighed the first time at 12 days post-op and then didn't weigh again till
I was 10 weeks post-op. My surgeon asks his patients (not many comply) to
weigh only at appointments or at support group meetings. That means that
you weigh only once a month and you don't know when you are on a plateau.
I followed his orders and didn't weigh again til I was in his office. I
had lost 30 pounds at 12 days; 66 at 10 weeks; 100 at 5 months and 120 at 6
months. Then I hit a terrible plateau - and I was weighing more frequently
because I was ill (not surgery related) and was seeing my surgeon more
often. For two months I only lost 5 pounds - it was terrible. Then in the
next two months I lost over 30. Now I'm at a stand still again. But, I'm
hoping that this plateau will break too.
Good luck to you!

For some reason, most post-ops experience the dreaded 3 week post-op
plateau. Its almost universal. It can last from a few weeks to a month or
so. But in every case, it then breaks and the weight starts dropping
again. Just stick to your doctors diet, and try to get in plenty of water,
and vitamins. Exercise is always a good mover of the weight, and when you
get to the food stage, protein first. Your also a lightweight (39 BMI), so
25 in the first month is darn good.

My very first post-op plateau was from weeks 5-7. It will pass soon and
you'll be on your way down again. Although plateaus can be very
frustrating, they do and will happen. :o)

Susan nearly everyone I know has a plateau anywhere from 3 to 5 weeks out
lasting various lengths. I did as well. In no way will it interfere with
your long-term success so just breathe deep and relax! I lost 36 pounds in
3 weeks, then nothing for 2 weeks. I found exercise (I started at almost 6
weeks out) really got the scales moving faster. Good luck!

I am 4 1/2 months post-op and have had many times where I don't lose for 1
week or more, and then BAM, I lose a few pounds again. Don't worry, it will
happen. I've already lost 82 lbs and have had many a "stand
still" time! Good luck.

Sung to the tune of Yellow Submarine.
We all live in the Plateau Regime,
The plateau regime,
the plateau regime....
Honey, it happens every once in a while (I am experiencing it as we speak)
and you have to tell yourself it is temporary and you are going to lose BIG
when it goes away! I promise you (and I am talking to myself too)
