Question:
I am anemic, which iron is best

I've been taking carbonyl iron as recommended by my wls surgeon. 50 mg per day elemental. Now my PCP has recommended that I switch to Nu-Iron, which is a polysaccharide form of iron. Can anyone tell me which is better. My ferritin level is 6 and that makes me very anemic.    — cjabates (posted on October 17, 2002)

Since you know what your PCP prefers, I'd now go back to your WLS surgeon and remind them what they told you to take and tell them that your PCP recommends whatever the new one is. See what they say.

Those are probably the best two forms of iron there are. The question is: what is the mg of the polysac one? The ones with which I am familiar are 150mg elemental. So, of course, that would be triple the carbonyl you're using. Look for the elemental mg on the back and see if that's a clue. Either form is well absorbed by us. Iron is always taken with vit C, never with any other meds, vites, minerals, dairy or caffeine. All alone, together for at least an hour.
