Question:
Is Apple Cider bad for us?
I realize it has many natural sugars and could make me a sensitive stomach dump. I have not had any problems just in eating an apple, though I know that just an apple is alot less concentrated. I have not dumped yet, though I have never eaten any sugary items (not including natural sugars...I have them several times a week) since surgery. I am 3 months out and this time of the year I crave apple cider so bad. I would just like to have a small cup of it but am afraid to try it. Has anyone out there had any experiences with apple cider and can you tell me what they are? Thanx!! — DRutherford (posted on October 12, 2002)

I have been drinking sugar free hot apple cider. You buy it in a box like
hot chocolate. It is delicious...I have to add a little Equal. I get mine
at Ingle's, Kroger has it too in their brand but it isn't as good as the
one I get at Ingle's. I am sure that you can get this brand...I think it is
Alpine, not sure.....at other stores, you can find it somewhere around the
tea, hot chocolate, etc......

I know fruit sugars are natural. You may have a higer dumping tolerance
than some of us. I've dumped on many fruits. But this summer, I ate fruit
daily and FINALLY have unloaded the extra 3-4 # I got for my trouble.
Apple cider.... check teh sugar g on the label of the most
"natural" prepared one you can find and that'll give you a rough
idea. I think you'll find it plenty enough to make your jeans tight. My
husband is totally addicted to the packaged s/f ones. I put a stick of
cinnamon in it to make it seem more like the real thing for him.

I am almost 8 weeks post op. I avoid sugar and have a HUGE fear of
dumping....however, I have had apple cider a couple of times in the past 2
weeks. The first time, I watered it down a little. The second time, I had
it straight....but both times, I sipped it very slow. I didn't have any
problems. Good Luck

Fortunately, I don't dump on sugar so I've no problem with juice (or
cider). You may. However, I don't see anything wrong with having a SMALL
cup of it. You know it has more sugar than the apple, but so long as you
have it in moderation as a treat, it shouldn't be a problem. I would
suggest that you try it at home where if you do dump, you have a place to
get over it :>)

I've had apple cider from a cider mill several times so far this fall and
have had no problems. I only drink about 4 oz at a time though. I would
double check your label if you purchase the apple cider in the grocery
store, just make sure it's 100% pure. By the way, I have heard but not
tried the Alpine Sugar Free Apple Cider mix,it's good. I say go for it,
just get your cider to go and try it at home, maybe just an ounce or 2 at
first. Besides, what's fall in Michigan without going to cider mills?? Good
luck and enjoy!!

I was on the web earlier today, looking at this site, they have sugar free
apple cider. It is perfectlysweet.com.
I don't know if it is good for you, but they have lots of sweet free
products.

To all you kind, sensible folks who are recommending apple cider mixes and
drinks: I can tell that most of you live someplace besides New England.
Real, honest-to-God apple cider that you buy at a roadside stand (one to
drink now, one to put in the mud room for a while to turn hard) bears no
resemblance to anything that comes out of a package. It's absolutely
divine, and I've missed it ever since I moved west 20 years ago. I'd give
it a try--maybe drink 4 oz. or so, and see how you feel. If I had the
chance to drink it, I'd be on it like a shot. Give it a try--it only comes
around once a year, and it's too good to pass up (in moderation). We have
to take care of our bodies, but in doing so, we shouldn't forget about our
souls.

True apple cider has nothing but apples in it, so it is fine for us to
drink. I'm talking about the stuff from the orchard or road-side stands.

I'm a fellow New Englander, born and raised in RI, though I have lived in
the DC area (yes, home of the recent sniper attacks) for some time now.
Nothing better than heading out to the mountains for some fresh apple
cider. The fresh squeezed kind has no sugar in it. And nothing tastes
better than apple cider in the mountains on a crisp, clear fall day.
