Question:
I went to my nutrition class this weekend
Now i am realy confused, she said protein shakes are no good? That milk & sugar free CIB is a better choice, ha anyone else been told this?? Thanks in advance!!!!!! — Amy M. (posted on September 16, 2002)

Many surgeons and nutritionists advise against protein shakes. While I
respect everyone's professional opinion and would never suggest that anyone
go against the advice of their surgeon or nutritionist - I disagree. Milk
doesn't have nearly the quantity of protein in it that a supplement does.
The same is true of CIB. Whole milk can have lots of sugar and calories.
Of course skim milk contains less sugar and calories. I find that it's not
uncommon for a surgeon's or nutritionist's hesitancy about protein
supplements to simply be a lack of knowledge. Let's face it, they're both
human and can't know everything about everything. Personally I still
supplement even 2 years post op. It's very helpful in appetite suppression
when it occasionally returns with a vengance and I find that overall I just
feel better when I supplement. Again, I would never advise anyone to go
against professional advice from a surgeon or nutritionist but I would
merely suggest you do a bit more research. We protein supplement advocates
are very committed and I know for a fact it's made a difference in my
overall WLS journey. However, many people have never supplemented and do
just fine. I'm not straddling the fence here - I just want everyone to
know that I respect everyone's opinions. Protein supplementation has just
been really good for me and I've been able to find several products that I

CIB tastes good. I'm pre-op. I thought I'd add protein powder with soy milk
to CIB.

It's better to get your protein from "real" food, but protein
shakes are far from useless. CIB only has 4 grams of protein per packet,
and 8 oz. of milk adds 8 grams, so you've got a total of 12 grams. One
scoop of protein powder (at least the kind I use, from GNC) provides 20
grams of protein. The math is simple.
For what it's worth, I've found that the people in my surgeon's office
don't know squat about nutrition. I've had to educate myself. I urge you
to do the same. Even when listening to experts, it's wise not to believe
everything you hear.

I don't know how CIB could be a better choice than protein drinks. I think
that real lean protein from animals is the best choice (chicken, turkey,
fish and low/no fat cheese and yogurt) but to say that CIB is a better
choice.. I'd ask why.. I can't think of any reason why...

CIB is not high in protein, but have you ever read the other ingredients?
It provides approximately 20 - 45% of a lot of your bodies daily required
nutrients. It doesn't provide Vitamin D, but the milk does that. So, CIB
with milk provides a fair amount of your daily nutrients. Protein drinks
don't provide much other than protein. I sometimes drink CIB, but when I
do I skip the milk and mix some additional protein powder to increase my
protein. I'm not one that is against milk, I'm just not crazy about it.

Depends on what you want & how you want to feel. I'm very anti-sugar,
as I want the weight OFF, not on. Milk = sugar, so that's out for me. You
can get 30g of protein, less than 6g of sugar in a protein drink made with
water. Your med.pro. may be referring to Ensure or Boost, which are
calories adders, much like the CIB + milk. As Rona said, most of them have
never seen a real protein supplement, so are not using the same frame of
reference that we are. I'm 8 yrs post-op, and still supplement beyond what
is required. If they told me tomorrow to sotp my shakes, I doubt if I could
do it! I'm so addicted to holding my wt & feeling good, that I'm not
ready to give it up!
