Question:
My first Consoltation coming up fast!!!!! Sept 19th

My questions in this: Does or Did anyone have Dr. Tillquist in Denver? What I wondering is what happens at your first appt? Do you get a surgery date that day? I am so nervous I just want to kinda know what to expect. Also (kinda embarring) do you have to take off your clothes when you get weighed? the reason I ask is Because of my my weight I have a very hard time shaving my legs, & if I have to undress I guess I will have to shave? Also do they measure you or just take your word for it. Sorry for all the ?'s. Thanks in advance!!!!! I'm just a bumdle of nerves!!!!    — Amy M. (posted on September 14, 2002)

I didn't have your surgeon, but what happened at my first appointment was that I got weighed (with my clothes on) and the surgeon discussed the surgery with me (drew a diagram of what the roux-en-y entailed and detailed the possible complications). My wife and I then were able to ask some questions and I signed the consent for surgery. I didn't get a surgery date until after the insurance approval 5 1/2 weeks later. I did not (or have not) gotten measured (I presume you are talking about chest, waist, hip, etc.). Hope this helps...JR (open RNY 7/17, -74 lbs)

Hi, I personally do not have Dr. Tillquist (in fact I live in Colorado Springs) however, I read all Colorado updates. Every person I have ever read that has Tillquist gets their date at the first consult. It is usually 3 months after that date. So you should be having surgery right around Christmas !! What a present for you !! Dana

Amy, I dont have your DR either,,but at my first consultation they weighed me with clothes on, then took all my measurements with my clothes on. I think the Bariatric Drs are familiar with our problems and would understand if you cant shave your legs.Good Luck. Nancy Poe

It is expected to be very nervous for your first consultation! Don't be afraid to ask questions because then that way you will be put more at ease. As far as the weighing, you probably won't be asked to undress. I have never heard of that happening. Most surgeon's know that weight, measurements and being undressed is a VERY confidential thing with obese people and they are considerate of that. Here's what happened at my consultation... I went in, they weighed me and then I went in the room. They asked what co-morbidities I had, what diets I have been on (both supervised and unsupervised) and if I had any questions. It would be really good for you to have some of these things written down. You will be nervous at the consultation and may forget. Write down a list of all the problems you have, diagnosed or not, that are associated with your weight. Then write down all the diets you can remember, both doctor supervised and ones you did yourself. Try to remember the estimated dates and how much you lost. I just actually made up numbers for that part, because I had no clue! You will also want to write down any questions you have for the surgeon. He will more than likely as you if you have any and then would be a great time to ask since you have his full attention. Between now and Thursday, so as much research as you can. Look up things on search engines with keywords like Gastric bypass, weight loss surgery, roux en y, etc. The more you know, the better informed and less nervous you are. Look up both the good and the bad things you see and then you will be better prepared with questions and such. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me.
