Question:
Help....Oatmeal stuck in throat, won't budge, and hurts...

I've been sooooooo good and decided to treat myself with a little oatmeal this morning. Looking back I'm sure I made it too thick. Then I was talking on the phone and took 2-3 bigger than normal bites until I realized it was too late. I have tried to throw up but it won't move. I can't even burp because no air can pass. Can I drink water? What else can I do????    — Lisa R. (posted on June 28, 2002)

Try to drink some hot tea or even hot water if you don't have tea. It will help it to either go down or come up. Good luck!

Relax. This too will pass :). Sit in a recliner with ypur feet up get a cup of tea or water and sip it slowly. As the last poster said it will either go down or come up. If you puke go on liquids for 24 hours. This will soothe your stomach and esphogas. Good Luck

Lisa, You poor dear! That is an AWFUL feeling! I agree with the other two posters. I learned the hard way too, not to talk on the phone and eat at the same time. In fact, I have to remind myself when I eat with others, that they do eat too fast & not to subconsciously try and keep up. It will pass. Hang in there!

Oh boy do I feel for you! I've never had oatmeal stuck, but I've had carrots, hamburgers, and chicken stuck. It's very painful! Here's what I do when something is stuck and it just won't come back up: I take deep breaths through my mouth. It helps to release the gas that builds up, which seems to help loosen things up a bit. I hope you find relief soon!!!

Try sipping on some carbonated beverage like diet pop. I know that its controversial, but it wont hurt just this once, besides my doctor says it's ok, and I have drank it all along. I used to work in the Emergency Room and when people with normal stomachs would get something caught in their throat, that's the first thing we would try. If that didnt work, then we had to go on to something else. Good luck!!

Hi, I am 14 mos post-op. The only way I have been able to be relieved of something being stuck is to sip some water. Every single time that has worked for me. E-mail me if you want to talk.

Hello: Gosh MISERY....been there...try some really warm hot tea....it always helped me...I also got on my hands and knees and tucked chin to chest when it got REAL BAD, seems like it just changed the directional flow of things....at this point, you would probably do just about anything to just throw up...try warm liquids...
