Question:
How long did it take for the Ketones to show up on the Keto-stix?
I am on a protein sparing diet and have to eat meats, some veggies and lots of liquids. No sugar, no carbs just basically meat. It's supposed to shrink /peel the fat off of my liver, so that surgery is easier. How long has it taken anyone to go into ketosis? — Elizabeth P. (posted on June 4, 2002)

I had to go on a modified protein sparing diet after my initial surgery
consult, and it took me two days. I can take a day up to a week, depending
on many factors, health, diabetes, weight, etc - or so I've been told.
Even a small amount of carbs can affect the ketostix urine test. That's
all I know about it.

You should go into ketosis within 48 hours of severely restricting your
carbs. Get a good carb counter and to get into deep ketosis don't eat more
than 10 grams of carb a day. You may not be counting all the little things
that can really add up. Just a taste of something, a stick of gum, even
sweet-n-low has a 1/2 a carb. Many things list that they have no carbs
because if it is less than 1 they won't list it. Those fractions add up!
