Question:
Abdominoplasty vs. Panniculectomy
I had a consult with a Plastic Surgeon yesterday to discuss my excess skin on my stomach. It has caused rashes and infections for the past 8 months. I was thinking that I would just get the panni, but he told me I have a hernia and that I would need to have abdominoplasty to tighten the unlining muscles to reduce the risk of another hernia. Did anyone else get this opinion from a PS? I am currently 10 months out with 20lbs left to lose. — Gail M. (posted on April 2, 2002)

Abdominoplasty, definitely. See my profile for the details.

I recently consulted with a plastic surgeon. He said my upper abdominal
muscles were still strong but the lower ones would need repair. He did not
really talk about the difference between a panni and abdominoplasty. Also I
want the muscles tightened, otherwise you are still left with a paunch.

A panniculectomy is the removal of excess skin and fat without any surgery
to the underlying muscles. An abdominoplasty removes the excess skin and
fat and also repairs any hernias or weak muscle structure. If you have a
hernia, or very weak/stretched abdominal muscles, an abdominoplasty will
give you the best, long-term results. If your surgeon discovers that there
are no problems with the muscles, then you will be fine with a
panniculectomy. I had my panniculectomy in November, and have a
beautifully flat abdomen. 16 lbs. of excess skin and fat were removed
(panniculectomy and armlift) and I couldn't be happier with the results!
Good luck.
