Question:
Eating raw vegetables post op
Hi! I am a little over ten weeks post op. I had a bleeding ulcer at 7 weeks (emergency room gave me Motrin). When did everybody else start is eat raw vegetables like carrots and cucumbers? I am dying for some. Thanks Tracy — tracyr (posted on March 23, 2002)

Tracy,
I started eating cucumbers about 4 weeks post op - I didn't eat the seeds
til about 8 weeks. I didn't start raw carrots til about 8 weeks either. I
did, however start eating raw onion and bell pepper at 6 weeks. I eat a
lot of cottage cheese with onion, cucumber, bell pepper and tomatos and I
have had no problems with the raw veggies. I started eating salad at about
6 weeks also.

Tracy, I also started eating raw veggies not too long after surgery-
probably about 6 wks. Raw cucumbers, tomatoes and bell peppers are my
favorites.

I remember trying to eat salads as I was sooooo hungery for them. But
things like peppers and onions (raw) did'nt set well. In fact I'm 10.5
months post op and I still can't eat raw peppers! They give me a good belly
ache :( But I could eat tomatoes just fine which I'm glad because I craved
them like I was addicted to them. But I guess it was several months before
I could do raw veggies.

Tracy ~ My doc gave me the go ahead for some raw veggies at my four week
check-up (5.5 weeks now). I mostly stick to carrots, they're easy on me
because no matter what, you have to chew carrots a lot. I like broccoli
too. I find neither are particularly acidic, which is nice. I'm going to
give it another little while before I try salad, becasue I know it's not
the easiest to digest, although I do plan to try some very well cooked
spinich tonight. Cucumbers gave me pretty bad heartburn before and at this
stage, the seeds worry me. As for onions, I would never eat a raw onion in
a million years before surgery, so I can't help you there. Experiment one
at a time and see how it goes. Good luck and enjoy!

I was given the go-ahead for soft raw vegetables (lettuce, tomatoes, and
such) at my 5 week follow-up visit. Surgeon said I can't have hard, chunky
raw vegatables (like carrots) until about 6 months!

My surgeon told me I could eat raw vegetables when I thought I was ready
(about 4 weeks) and I tolerate them well so I make them my snack usually.
JUst try one and see how you do.
