Question:
How long should the honeymoon period last?
I am a little over three months post op and I really don't feel like I have had a honeymoon period. I have lost an average of 2 pounds a week since 1 month out. Don't get me wrong I am happy about the weight loss, but since I don't seem to have a honeymoon period will I still be able to meet my goal? I started at 250 and I am now 196.5. I am 5'7" and would like to be 150. I had an open RNY on 12/5/01. — Kathy P. (posted on March 18, 2002)

Hi Kathy, I think you are doing great! My suggestion to you would be to
look at percentage of weight lost rather than pounds lost. You have lost
53 1/2% of your excess body weight. You are more than half way there, and
you are only a little over three months out. I lost 75 pounds in the same
time frame, which is more weight, but it was just at 50% of my excess body
weight. So you are actually ahead of me at that point even though you have
lost fewer pounds. I hope this makes sense. Now that I have compared our
weight loss...remember to not compare yourself to anyone else! You may
loose slow and steady or you may loose quickly at the beginning and then
taper off to a slower pace. You may hit multiple plateaus or none at all.
We all loose at different rates. The important thing is to follow you
surgeons post-op eating plan, and you will be succesful. Keep up the good
work. The months will fly by and you will emerge healthier and filled with
energy. Till later...Alejandra Garman GR/DS 6-22-01 307/190

I consider my honeymoon my first month. I too am a lightweight. Started
245, 5'5.5(had to get in that .5). I lost 30 lbs. the 1st month and has
been 10 lbs./month since then. The other poster is correct when talking
about percentage, you are doing great. And while us lightweights will lose
slower, remember that you will reach goal much quicker. So that is
something to look forward to. Lap RNY 11/9/01 245/178, 36 lbs. to goal!!
