Question:
Are there more post-op problems associated with one or the other?

I am having a proximal RNY. My physician suggests that it is a bit safer and less malabsorptive. Would it then be less effective in weight loss reduction?    — Elizabeth P. (posted on January 13, 2002)

My doctor said his experience shown that 95% of his patients lost their desired weight without having to deal with excessive diarrhea after having a proximal bypass versus a distal bypass. He said with the distal bypass there is more potential for diarrhea and that with most of his patients they had the same amount of weight loss with the proximal bypass and didn't have to deal with the diarrhea. I hope this helps!
