Question:
How much weight can you lift if you have the LAP WLS?
Just wondering, also, I read that WLS you can loose some hair, Is there anyway to help prevent that? Thanks!! — Jennifer W. (posted on January 9, 2002)

My surgeon says to lift no more than 30 lbs for LAP RNY for at least 6
weeks after the surgery. Hair loss: Keep up a high protein and vitamin
intake and you should not notice too much hair loss.

My surgeon said not to lift more than 10 lbs. for 6 wks. following surgery.
A gallon of milk weighs 10 lbs. I weighed it just for kicks and was
surprised that it weighed that much. As far as the hair loss goes, with
all 6 of my surgeries and 2 childbirths I have gone through hair loss,
about 3 months after. I go to a support group meeting with over 100 people
and I have yet to see anyone that was obviously losing hair. It just seems
like a lot is falling out and your hair gets thinner, but it eventually
stops and then grows back.

I was able to lift my 30 pound toddler (per my surgeon) w/in a couple of
days of surgery. Re. the hair... I did the protein and Biotin supplements,
but it still has started to fall out heavily. It started later for me than
expected (4 1/2 months), but it's fairly noticable now at 5 months. I
think if it's going to fall, it'll do it no matter what you do.

My surgeon said nothing over 20 pounds for a month. I cheated lifting 70
pound things after about a week. The chance of a incisional hernia is near
zero, but do follow your doctors orders.

I just had lap wls in December and my doc told me if it was heavier than a
gallon of milk, don't life it for at least four weeks. That's about 2-3
lbs.
Also, hair loss... I have stuff on my profile (towards the end) about
that!! :) Check it out, if you want! :)
