Question:
Someone said that hot dogs were a noo noo... why?
I was in the chat room and someone said that hot dogs were a noo noo... I would like to know why hot dogs are a no no... I have one hotdog a month and it tastes great! — Pamela W. (posted on January 8, 2002)

The only thing I can think of when it comes to hotdogs, is that they really
have no nutritional value and are high in fat as well as high in sodium
which will cause to you to retain water and therefore hold on to the
pounds. I have not tried them and as stated before the opinions of
everyone will vary greatly! If you like them and are able to tolerate
them, I don't see any problem in eating them once in awhile.

The only bad thing I heard was not to eat them soon after surgery as with
all the swelling the casing could block your stoma. I eat them every once
in a while (I like Hebrew National all beef) with no problems but I did
dump on a Nathan's all beef. WON'T be eating another one of those!

For me, I cannot tolerate any meat that has a casing. I just can't digest
them and end up vomiting. However, I can eat hotdogs like Oscar Mayer, as
they do not have those "natural" casings. Of course, my mantra is
"all things in moderation".

If your stomach can tolerate a hot dog there is no reason why you shouldn't
be able to have one every once in a while. There are very few foods that I
consider a no no. I limit the amount of sugar I eat - although I have been
known to have a small piece of candy and even had a tiny sliver of
chocolate cake at our staff meeting to celebrate my birthday a little late.
I had this surgery to enable me to eat like a "normal" person and
part of that isn't obcessing over everything I eat or worrying about the
number of carbs or calories I consume in a day. That's too much like a
diet, and for me diets don't work. There are many out there that won't
agree with me and I respect that.

Just had one for lunch! Hebrew National came out with a 97% fat free hot
dog. One beef frank (49g) = 50 calories, 1.5g fat, 2g carb, & 6
protein grams... SWEET! And they taste great. They are a bit smaller than
a regular hot dog but for 1.5 grams of fat, what the hay, have 2! (If you
have a big pouch like me) You won't even have to limit yourself to 1 a
month though I wouldn't recommend one a day! For lunch I had one of those
hot dogs wrapped in a reduced fat Grand Biscuit (170 calories, all carbs
<bad I know>) It was one big pig in a blanket for 230 calories; no
guilt here!

I like to have a pop open Ziegles hot dog once in awhile.
But at 17 grams a fat per hot dog I don't do it too often!
We can make better food choices than hot dogs, but we need to enjoy some of
our favorite foods occassionaly. ;)

Hey I had a cheese dog the other day, your fine. I believe in anything in
moderation and try to make good choices most of the time. I ate mostly the
dog and some of the bun. I used to binge on bad foods before surgery when I
dieted. I will not go there again.... Better to eat some of everything.

I don't think they are necessarily a no no. But at 4 1/2 months out I
still cannot handle eating one. They just sit there.. Even if I cut one
up into small pieces. Everyone is different.
