As far as my experience went, I just had to wait and let the gas come out,
on its own. You cant rush it. I know. My gutts were gurgling, big time, in
the hospital, and when it did come out, watch out! : ) I think they want
you to have a good bowel movement before they let you go, too. Believe me,
it will all come out in due time! Sometimes with very raunchy results! : (
Bad news for your roommate, or your hubby, whoever is in your near
vacinity, at the time. LOL

HI
there is only one thing that i know of and that is to walk, walk walk, and
walk some more it gets the bowels working relieving the gas it took me a
2 weeks to pass gas after my surgery and that wasnt until i could walk
hourly. ask the dr if theres anything they can do for her i dont know of
any drugs but mabey??? I do know the more pain meds used the longer it
takes the bowels to resume functioning properly....

I walked 3 times the day of surgery, perhaps thatsa why I wasnt bothered by
gas. In any case walk, walk, walk.....

The only way to get rid of intestinal gas is either to burp it or fart it
out.If your mom is fresh post op she may need some help besides the walking
to get rid of the gas. The pain meds are very constipating and with limited
liquids consumed constipation can be a real problem. The next day after
surgery I asked in the hospital for milk of magnesia and that did the
trick, not only got rid of the gas but had a good stool too. I needed a
little help for the first couple months, I think my intestines had trouble
getting the hang of the new plumbing. Glycerin suppositories help get the
lower intestines working too.
I thought the gas pains were worse than the operation pain.

I was ready to be discharged but hadn't passed gas yet, so the nurse
offered me a suppository. I can't tell you the name of it because I have
no idea what it was, but maybe your mom could ask for one. I believe my
surgeon had to prescribe it before the nurse could give it to me.

I totally agree with Bob -- walking will get the system moving and also get
the gas out more comfortably. :) I walked a lot immediately post-op in
the hospital and I didn't experience a terrible amount of gas. I think
that walking also helped that first bowel movement (and subsequent ones)
along... so an extra bonus! LOL All the best, (lap ds with gallbladder
removal, January 25, 2001, 10 months post-op and still feelin' fabu, preop:
307 lbs/bmi 45 now: 198 lbs/bmi 28/size sweet 16 but squeezin' into a

I had terrible gas pains when I was new post op. I went to Wal-Mart and got
their generic brand of Gas-X (Equate brand). Anyway get some extra strength
Gas-X or it's generic. It helps the pain.... and she will be
"farty". :)

Most surgeons will prescribe a Dulcolax Suppository for gas pains.
Your mom needs to ask the nurse for one. If there is no order
for one then the nurse needs to call the Dr. and get it.
Walking also will help. Good Luck.
