Question:
Is a 6 inch Subway sandwich too much for a meal? 7oz

I can eat a 6 inch Subway sandwich =7ounces for lunch and it feels like just enough, not too much , not too little. I have no problems with bread so I eat bread, veggies and all. I had RNY 4 months ago. Can anyone else eat this much? Help!    — Dana D. (posted on October 18, 2001)

I eat them often (7 under 6). Honestly, I don't think I could've eaten the whole thing at four months but everyone is different. As long as you don't push it, you'll be fine. Remember, the cheese and mayo is fattening. I put lite mayo on at home and ff or lite cheese. I also get the whole wheat bread. I think it's a good choice food.

It's hard not to compare yourself to others. It would bother me if I could eat that amount. I'm at 4 months. I think I could eat maybe 2-3 bites (with bread included) but then I'd begin to feel full. I also have no probs with bread. I don't know. I would check with your doc. It does seem like 7 oz in one meal is a lot at 4 months but I don't want you to be alarmed. You may want to consider if you're satisfied with your weight loss etc. If you're doing all the right things... do you feel as if you need to make some changes? Do you know how long it takes before you're hungry again? There are a lot of things that will factor in to this. But it is so hard when you think you're supposed to be doing something a certain way. For instance, I can take regular sized bites without chewing things to a pulp. I always could with no problems (I've never thrown up). That bothers me sometimes because I feel like I'm different and am doing things wrong. I hope this helps!

At 14 months post op I can tell you there is no way I could eat a 6" sub - certainly not with the bread. I just finished a small hamburger from Burger King (52 cents for lunch is great!) and could only eat half the bun. My husband & I went to a deli for dinner last night and I had 1/4 of the corned beef sandwich with only 1/2 the bread. Bread doesn't bother me it's just that I don't have that much room.

Everyone is different. I am almost three months and i can just about eat one. Don't let it freak you out its not reflective of your potential to lose weight. I find that I can eat much more than others, yet I am still losing an average of a pound a day. Do what feels right for you.

Everyone is different and the truest test is whether or not you are losing weight. But, at three years post-op, I can't eat a 7 inch sub. That much bread would do me in. I can't even eat an entire Mcdonald's hamburger. I can comfortably eat the whole meat patty and half the bun. At 4 months post-op, I couldn't even eat untoasted bread. If you are healthy and losing weight, you have nothing to worry about.....we're all different.

Dana, WOW that sounds good right about now! I bet it's fine as long as the bread doesn't bother you and you are still losing weight. I wouldn't make a super-regular habit out of it because it's probably not enough protein, but as a treat, why not, if it goes down well?<br>I'm one month out and can eat "too much" too. But I am sticking to 1/2 cup per meal and that seems to work OK.

Dana, I'm coming up on four months post-op as well. I haven't tried any subs yet, but we buy those 97% lean hamburger patties (The ones that have the American Heart Association stamp of approval on them) as they are almost half the calories of full-fat burgers with 25 grams of protein. I can eat one of those quarter pound (before cooking) burgers on a bun with a tiny bit of mixed vegetables. My weight loss has been excellent--if yours has been as well, I'd say, "Don't worry!" = >

Dear Dana, Im also 4 months out, and am amazed at how much I can actually eat, after only a couple bites seem to fill me totally up a month ago. It seems at 4 months I am able to eat a "Normal size amount". But as the other posters said it depends on the person. When I go to subway, I have a hard time with the bread, so I just usually get a steak sub with all the veggies, and take it home, Scrap it all off into a bowl and have a salad/sandwich with a little Italian dressing. It fills me completly up and im satisfied. I havent been able to eat any bread products, they fill me up too fast, and I feel uncomfortable, But if your not having problems, and your ok with your current weight lose, then I dont see too much of a problem, We are more active, and are adjusting to our new eating skills. Congratulations and dont worry too much. Just eat healthy and dont push yourself...Good Luck!

This surgery is only a tool. The surgery gave you a 1 oz stomach pouch with a very small stoma(end of a pencil eraser) for the food/liquid to go through. The pouch and stoma will stretch, that is why they say to eat very slowly and chew foods to mush, to limit the stretching. The more often you put large amounts of food into your pouch at a time it will continue stretching. Just because you can eat a large amount of food doesn't mean you have to. The choice is yours. It is suggested by researchers that people fluid load 30min+ before eating. That means drinking a lot of non calorie or low calorie liquids. The liquid runs through and can give the sensation of fullness that helps people limit the amount they eat. By not drinking with meals will help keep you from washing food through. By waiting at least 30min after eating to drink something will help you feel full longer. Good luck.
