Donna,
I gave up all artificial sweeteners after reading an article in Oxygen
Magazine about aspartme (equal) The options as I see them are eat sweets
with sweeteners, or don't eat sweets at all. I've decided to give up sweets
and try to see fruit as a treat:) I am having this surgery 75 percent for
my health (25% for other thinks, wink wink) so it seems silly to me to have
a surgery for health, then take something I feel is bad for my health. I
wish you luck whatever you decide to do, a lot of people have eaten
artificial sweeteners for years and seem fine.

I was also concerned with the use of sugar substitutes during the beginnin
healing stages. I am very sensitive to aspertame. I resigned myself to
the fact that I HAD to use them at least for the first couple of weeks
while on liquids. Actually, you aren't really able to get in that much
were it will be a problem. The only thing that I really used was the SF
Jello and then I didn't eat much of it because I couldn't stand the taste.
When you get to where you can have yogurt, the big Walmart stores with
groceries carry a product called Blue Bunny Yogurt that is sweetened with
Splenda which I am able to use with NO PROBLEMS and it tastes like sugar.
No nasty aftertaste. There are also juices, hot chocolate, etc that is
sweetened with Splenda. Check out their website at www.splenda.com. I use
it for my coffee, tea, desserts and anywhere else that I would normally use
sugar.

Splenda is the only no calorie sweetener that is made
from sugar, so it tastes like sugar. Splenda is the sweetening ingredient
that is already used to sweeten many low calorie foods and beverages.
Splenda is now available at your favorite store in two forms -- granular,
which measures and pours like sugar, as well as in packets to add to your
favorite beverages.. I cook with Spenda in all my recipes it does not
separate in baking like sweetnlow and others that do not do well when
heated .Also spenda does not leave that after taste because it is made
from REAL sugar..

I am also against the artificial sweeteners. I started to use stevia, it
is in the general nutrition stores. I havent heard of any negative side
effects. If any one has any info on this please post it.

Try stevia extract. Stevia is actually a plant that is around 300 times
sweeter than surgar. It comes in a powder and liquid form. It does not
break down when heated so it is excellent for cooking. Check out the
following web site for complete information about stevia.
www.holisticmed.com/sweet/stv-faq.txt People have been using stevia for
hundreds of years in other countries without any bad side effects. Stevia
is now being used by major multinational food companies like Coca Cola and
Beatrice foods for sale in Japan, Brazil and other companies. This is a
very interesting article.
I have also read reports about Splenda that you might want to read before
trying it. Just search the web for aspertame, or artificial sweetners. I
can't remember the website regarding Splenda, but it's worth researching.

I don't like artificial sweeteners and rarely use them. I do on occasion
use Splenda, which actually is a naturally occuring sugar that is a mirror
image of sucrose. And it tastes like sugar. I have found that I can
tolerate small amounts of real sugar (about 6 grams at a time) and that is
enough to allow me to sweeten my coffee, eat a couple of bites or dessert,
or whatever. It keeps me satisfied. I also eat fruit and have never dumped
on fruit. I have used fructose (another naturally occuring sugar) to bake
with and didn't dump with that, either (although I didn't eat much of what
I baked). I have tried stevia and found it tastes incredibly bitter to me!
Try it before you buy a crate of protein bars.

I am also against artificial sweeteners and dislike Aspertame particularly.
The biggest place this has been a problem for me is with protein drinks.
They all seem to have either sugar or something nasty in them. I don't
know of any made with Splenda. Other than that, I will do a little bit of
sugar here and there, but it's well under the amount that would make me
dump and it really has turned into a treat. I bought some Splenda but
haven't opened it, because I haven't needed any sugar since I bought it. A
lot of the craving for sweets tends to go away post op.

The Zero Carb Isopure (the clear fruit-flavored ones) protein drinks have
Splenda in them. Splenda is usually called "sucralose" when it's
in something.

Splenda. I use it in everything.

I use different products for different things. I stil use "pink or
blue" packets in my rare iced tea. I bake with SugarSlim (granulated
& brown), use their brown on my hot cereal. Many of the protein drinks
are changing from aspartame to other sweeteners, but mine personal favorite
still has it as the last ingredient. As more and more people hit their
mid-50's and the diabetes sets in, I think the choices for sugar free are
expanding tremendously. When I had my surgery in 1994, the only sugar free
stuff was aspartame, pretty much. LOTS of choices today.

I agree w/you about artificial sweetners. Do some research on Splenda as
well (type in the name & search) you'll find that this is quite like
Equal and it's side effects. Why can't we find something that is safe for
us? I won't allow my children to use any artifical sweetners as the chance
for nuralogical problems in children are very high! I try not to use them
at all. I did extensive research on Equal and that was enough for me.
Now, I'm checking into Splenda and Steva. So far, I'm not thrilled about
Splenda and I don't really know anything about Steva. Even if Splenda is
from sugar - it's how they treat it that makes it harmful! don't be
fooled!

I fisagree that neurological problems due to Nutra Sweet are "very
common"...if serious side affects were very common the product would
be withdrawn from market....even when there is little evidence..as in that
ingredient in vaccines that some parents believed causes autism..the fda
has removed the product.
