Question:
Has anyone had WLS surgery after a hysterectomy?

I have looked for questions relating to my question. I have had a abdominal hysterectomy, which my medical doctor has stated is a major cause of weight gain in women in their 30's. I wonder if anyone had a hysterectomy and found less complications with weight loss surgery? Please let me know. Linda    — Linda B. (posted on June 26, 2001)

I had a partial hysterectomy when I was 30 -- the dr. took everything except 2/3 of my left ovary; 10 yrs. later I had what was left of the left one removed. Both were abdominal (bikini cut...incisions just above the pubic area) It's when you have to take hormones that we gain weight + the older we get most of us have metabolism problems too. I had open RNY on Jan. 8, 2001; lost 65 lbs., feel great & the only problems I have is when I eat too fast and/or don't chew, chew, chew.

I had a full hysterectomy a year prior to RNY surgery. I had no complications, but I don't attribute that to the previous hysterectomy. I don't see the correlation. If you have further questions, let me know. I was 43 when I had the first surgery, 44 when I had RNY.

Hmm. I had a total hystie in 1981, WLS in 1994. I guess I never saw a correlation between the two at all. The hystie was easier, but then, I weighed about 140 (& was much younger) when I did that vs 262 at WLS. I didn't have complications with either, but I was already good at following post-op directions. Breathe, walk, drink. So, perhaps that made it easier for me?

I had a total hysterectomy at age 39 when I weighed approximately 250 lbs., then I had my lap RNY at age 54 at 312 lbs. I don't see any correlation between the two surgeries at all. Women experience significant metabolic changes in their bodies following removal of one or both ovaries. These changes often lead to weight gain post-op. Providing the post-op guidelines are followed closely, WLS should be a successful journey whether the patient has had a previous hysterectomy or not. Good luck!

I had a total hysterectomy 3 years ago. I have gained between 20-30 lbs since then. I don't know that I would attribute my weight to the hysterectomy as I have always been large.

I had a stomach stapling in 1980. In 1982, I had a total hysterectomy. THREE YEARS later, I started gaining weight back. On 9/25/02, at age 52, I had an RNY. No problem!

Yes, I had a hysterectomy in October 2000, and I'm scheduled for my WLS on June 12th. I gained a lot of weight after my hysterectomy, and that may be one of the reasons why I was approved so quickly.
