I started back with Diet Pepsi at six months post-op. Still not drinking
the 2 litres a day I used to! I didn't have any problems with it, but I am
likely to hiccough a bit when I drink too fast.

I had Open RNY surgery on Jan 11, 2001. My doctor let me have diet soda as
soon as I could drink. In fact, I had Diet Pepsi and Diet Sprite in the
hospital with no ill effects. I guess it just depends on your surgeon.

I am currently 5 months post-op and I started with flat pop at 3 months,
and now I can sip on regular pop. I am lucky, I can drink regular, not
diet. I know I shouldn't but I don't drink nearly the huge amount that I
use to. It now takes me 4 days to go through a 2 liter bottle.

My doctor tells his patients "never" drink soda (diet or regular,
not even if they're flat) because it can stretch the pouch. And, one woman
in the support group said she started drinking sodas and it stretched her
pouch and had to have a re-do on the surgery (well, she ate more than the
sodas too, but she did say that helped stretch it). Sooo, I'm afraid to
try any type of soda, even tho I really really miss drinking them.

I didn't drink pop for a year after my surgery. The carbonation caused too
much gas in my stomach which caused too much discomfort.( I have since
found out that I am allergic to chocolate which is very similar to the cola
bean). I don't drink anything while I eat, I just take very small sips to
wet my mouth.(this is a big switch for me since pre-surgery I would drink a
pitcher of water with every meal). Other than meals though I can drink as
much pop as I like with no ill effects (unless I am having a bad day and
can't keep anything down-which happens less and less frequently with each
passing day). Of course I had the open-banded vertical gastroplasty and
don't have to worry about the pouch stretching.
