Question:
Experience with gas one year post op?

I am over one year post-op (proximal RNY) and have been, in general, quite successful with weight loss and general health. One problem which continues to plague me is GAS, such that I am unfit to be around other human beings. It seems to be unrelated to any specific foods, and has been unresponsive to remedies like enzymes, Gas-X, charcoal, etc. The only time I can be sure I won't have it is if I fast, taking only non-caloric liquids. Recently, for an unrelated situation, I was on antibiotics for about a week. The gas problem went away completely for the whole time I was on the antibiotics, but now is starting to return. I recalled some mention somewhere about bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, in individuals who lack hydrochloric acid in their stomachs. This was an idea I had always placed in the area of medical quackery, but now it is beginning to make sense. Anyone?    — [Anonymous] (posted on January 27, 2001)

You should really try Milk of Magnesia. It works wonders. But taste bad. Try taking a large dose at first, then take at least once or twice a weeks.

I have had the same problem. I had the DS surgery 20 months ago and went to the doctor recently for a check-up and told him of my problem. He prescribed Flagyl 250 mg. He said if this works he may put me on a low dosage to keep the gas under control. So far so good.
