Question:
Why no milk?

I see that many of you mention that we should not be drinking milk. Aside from lactose intolerance (if applicable), why not?? I am almost 3 months post op, and when I first came home from the hospital, milk was on my "diet" 3x a day. Now I only drink maybe 1 large glass in the a.m., and occassionally at night....fat free of course. Just curious.    — tlg6056 (posted on January 9, 2001)

Tammy, many people have been told by their doctors different (I mean VERY, VERY different) things to eat and drink and when. As long as you are following what YOUR doctor wants you to do, then you are doing great!!! I know that milk has protein in it and that is where my doctor wants me to get some protien. The sugar that is in milk in good sugar (it is not refined sugar that does nothing for you and if you can consider ANY sugar good, then it is a "good" sugar). Many people think that ANY type of sugar is a bad thing. Milk also has calcium in it, granted not a lot, but it does have some and we need that also. Any vitamin or mineral that you can get "naturally" is so much better for you then "man-made" items, your body can absorb and break them down better. I think that milk is okay, but many others do not and that is okay with me. SO, if your doctor says "milk makes a body good" then drink milk - it is really up to you and your doctor. Hugs Jann

You will find a lot of conflicting things here, but for me, my doctor and nutritionist both tell me that milk is fine -- IF I can tolerate it. As it turns out, great quantities of milk don't work for me anymore, but I can drink half a glass or so just fine. I prefer to mix my protein drinks with milk. So milk and water are pretty much all I drink anymore. But do what your doctor says! :)

Milk is a high sugar drink. We don't absorb much of the fats, protein or calcium in it, so it doesn't have much food value for us. Normally, milk is used to fatten up babies or prevent wt loss in the elderly. So, even if you tolerate milk well, it has no plusses, only minuses toward our total wt loss.
