Question:
Is this the least intrusive surgery and is it available in California yet or at all?

The Alvarado group in San Diego is participating in the clinical trials.

I did some research on this procedure because I would've like to have had a
less intrusive surgery...but I was not willing to prolong the poor quality
of life that was mine for any longer than necessary...and I was not sure
how long it would take before my insurance would cover a "new"
procedure. I am very, very happy with my open, proximal RNY and if I had
to do it over again, I would.

On 11/14/00 I had a Lap RNY. I only have 5 little scars (my Dr. even used
the self absorbing sutures) I am 2 weeks out, and have not had any
problems as far as with sutures or healing. I personally feel this is they
was to go. It is surgery, but I was released the next day.

Hi -- Dr. Carlos Gracia in Pleasanton, CA (SF area) is in the FDA trials. I
am a trials patient 13 months post-op and am 5 pounds away from goal --
from 256 to 161. I have been VERY pleased with my band. I didn't get
coverage, but my insurance wouldn't cover any WLS for me -- I only had a
BMI of 37.5. I paid cash. However, a friend got her band covered through
Cigna without a problem.
Dr. Wittgrove no longer places bands -- he has effectively quit the
trials.
I also know of more surgeons throughout the country and around the world
who place AGBs. It's really popular internationally, but because of the
lengthy trials, it has taken awhile for it to catch on in the States.

I just met Dr. Wittgrove on 1/05/01. He said he IS STILL participating in
the clinical trials but that he WOULD NOT "recommend" this
procedure. He said that both him and his partner, Dr. Clark, are
"disappointed with the results."
