Question:
OK, I seem to be the only person on this site who can eat just about anything!

Does anyone else out there have this problem or have any words of advice? I had my surgery on 7/31/00 and craved and was able to eat (for the most part) semi-solid foods. Since then, I've been able to eat almost anything I want and in fairly large quantities. I can polish off an entire bag of microwave popcorn, a whole can of chili, an entire frozen microwave dinner, etc... I've only had dumping syndrome 1 time and that was after I ate 2 bowls of Honey Bunches of Oats cereal (yes, 2 bowls!) Please don't tell me I have an eating disorder, obviously that is the case or I wouldn't have had the surgery in the first place. By the way, my BMI before surgery was just a little over 40. I would suspect that your stoma (outlet from your stomach pouch) is stretched. This would allow you to eat too much, because the food goes in and out of your pouch quickly and you can keep stuffing more food in. You may have stretched your stoma by eating solid foods a little too early, or it may have stretched gradually by eating a little more each day. Or, it might just be bad luck. How is your weight loss? If you are not losing weight, or losing very slowly, you might want to ask your surgeon for a scope to measure your stoma. Also, if you went on a liquid diet for several days, your stoma might shrink a little on its own.

Brandy, What type of surgery did you have? Could that be the reason? If you are losing weight just enjoy.

No , I am this way too. I make myself only eat smaller amounts 99% of the time and eat slowly to get the full feeling with less food. But , I feel like I can eat a lot this week. I am hungry a LOT and seem to eat more at times especially when it is something i love like steak or lobster at a restaurant. I try to eat it slowly I really do , but it is a hard struggle at times. I am still losing , and NEVER mix solids and liquids( a bowl of cereal , soup and crackers etc.) so i don't know about the cereal deal. But I do agree wholeheartedly with someone else, this surgery is a tool. I may still be a novice at using it even after 5 months , but I am going to try to become a master at it. Try slowing down while you eat , chew well and take time between bites, have a conversation at the table between bites if need be. It takes a while for our nerves to tell our head we are full and definitely have your stoma checked. Good luck, Heather
