Question:
I take a synthroid pill every day (thryoid replacement) because my thyroid doesn't
work, does anyone know if I'll still be able to take my thyroid medication after surgery, and will it be absorbed into my system the same way? The pill is tiny, like the size of a baby aspirin. My surgery is Open RNY and 5 weeks away. — laceybaby (posted on October 31, 2000)

I am in the same situation. I had no problem at all continuing my meds
after surgery, and my med level did nt be adjusted. But when you do your
other bloodwork, be sure that your thyroid is checked as well periodically.
Sometimes after surgeyr the levels need to be changed.

I also take synthroid every day and have had my thyroid removed. So far my
levels are fine. I am 3 months post-op and will be having them checked
again on Nov.14th. At that time I will know if I need to increase or in
some cases we are decreased because the need for the hormone is not as
great. I take it fine after my protein in the morning. For more info check
the data base. Post-op Health, Thyroid. Also pre-op. We have had several
things on this topic that you may find helpful. Good Luck.

I had thyroid cancer and had my thyroid removed in 1998. Synthroid is my
life line. I had an open RNY 9 weeks ago and my levels are all great. I
have to get blood work done regularly because he will have to lower my
dosage of synthroid as I lose weight. I used to take Synthroid and Cytomel
but since I have lost 119+ pounds my Endo. took me off the Cytomel. Good
Luck with your surgery.

I've never had any trouble taking my Synthroid. In fact, many of my pills
are much much larger than the Synthroid, and I have no trouble taking any
of them. Have your MD check your levels periodically to make sure you're
absorbing the medication properly.
