Question:
Are there any precautions that I should take concerning hormones for menopause?
I had an open RNY this year and am at the beginning stage of menopause. My gynecologist has suggested that I wait six months post-op before beginning hormone therapy. Should I take any extra precautions since I've had WLS? — [Anonymous] (posted on September 16, 2000)

I would suggest that your hormones will change as you lose the weight. The
rapid fat loss and the adjustment will wreak havoc with your system. All
hormones are greatly effected by how much extra fat we are carrying and
estrogen and insulin are the most radical of these. It would probably be
impossible for your GYN to know what is going on with HRT when you are
continuing to lose weight so quickly. It is good advice to wait. Won't hurt
a thing. When your weight loss slows down then the Dr. will be able to tell
what is going to work best for you.

I agree with Steph - just be sure to take your calcium supplements. If you
haven't had a bone density test done yet, suggest you get that done ASAP.
You'd want to monitor carefully for any calcium deficiency even without the
WLS, but it's especially important now.
God Bless, KC
