Question:
I'm looking for people who can eat anything they want?
Like fast food, cake, ice cream, corn, broccoli, meats and etc. I also want some ideas on types of foods to eat that I can enjoy. I am really kind of scared to eat food at all and just need help of people who had WLS. Thank You — [Anonymous] (posted on May 28, 2000)

I'm 10 weeks post-op following a lap RNY. I have avoided sugar-containing
foods, not only because I don't want to experience "dumping
syndrome", but primarily because I have felt that the decision to have
this surgery was too important to deliberately sabotage my weight loss by
falling back into old eating habits. I have been able to eat any
vegetables (raw or cooked) including broccoli, cauliflower, corn, etc...and
all fruits that I have tried so far. Ground meats have been fine as well
as fish, shellfish and poultry. The only thing that gave me any trouble to
date was pork tenderloin...I chewed it thoroughly, but it sat like a rock
and made me really uncomfortable. There are a lot of creative options out
there for you...take small bites, chew thoroughly and eat slowly! Good
luck.

I echo what Diane and Barb stated I can eat anything I want ..I love spicy
foods and only limit certain foods for those reasons mentioned. I no
longer have a desire for sugar so that makes this tool called RNY the
best surgery option for me.. I'm a little over 5 months post-op and
down 111 pounds.. and the good news is I eat whatever I desire. (just
so happens I don't desire sugar) ;-)

Folks like me, who had a DS, can eat anything we want, even sweets, with no
ill effects. Like some RNY patients, our desire for sweets is usually
greatly reduced from what it was pre-op. If you've already had WLS and have
an RNY, then you need advice from those who had the same surgery. If you're
still looking at your options and would like more info on the Ds, go to
www.duodenalswitch.com. Best of luck to you.

I had the DS almost 6 months ago and am able to eat whatever I want, though
in small portions. I do splurge and eat special foods on the weekends, but
Mon - Fri I follow a WW type set up....salads, yogurt, crackers, cheese,
non fried foods, low carbs and primarily protein. I do snack on some
favorites once in awhile...handful of chips or 1/2 cup frozen yogurt. I
like the ability to enjoy favorite foods...a small portion fills me and
satisfies me so that I can move on.....the hold is not food on me, but me
on food. With the DS I have made friends with food....also, a great deal of
the phobia with fat content is not the same for all. I rarely have the runs
if I stick to 25 % or less calories from fat a day...but it is not
something I walk around figuring out! The DS is a very liveable lifestyle.
Good luck to all and be well.....jackie

I had the proximal RNY on 1-11-00. I am able to eat anything I want...just
not much of it.I almost envy those that experience dumping, as I never
have. At least if I dumped, I would stay away from the offending food.
Before surgery I craved the salty, fatty foods, now I crave sugar. I think
I'm going through a phase where I'm trying to find something that will make
me sick.....crazy huh!!! I do eat my protein and I love my vegies though.
I'm a little surprised, as I'm eating foods that I never thought I would be
able to again. Dani
