Question:
why would you have to lose weight before the surgery?
Is this some kind of test of your resolve? A hoop to jump through? I thought the whole point was that diets don't work and that the surgery was for people with morbid obesity. What is the rationale here? — merri B. (posted on February 25, 2000)

I was told by my dr that the reason pre-op weight loss is suggested is due
to the liver. The heavier you are the more swollen your liver. If a few
pounds is lost before surgery it helps during the procedure and recovery
because the liver will be smaller.
