Question:
Surgical Implications
Did the weight loss/lack of fluids alter your seizure frequency/severity? Were dosages reduced...on which drugs? Dilantin, valpro, pheno, teg/carb, lithium, new rotten? — [Anonymous] (posted on October 19, 1999)

Regarding seizure increase following surgery: I'm an epileptic who has been
unmedicated for nearly 10 years (formerly on Tegretol) and in years past,
crash diets usually triggered bouts with seizures. Very low-fat diets, such
as Nutrisystem, etc., usually meant I would experience seizures for a few
weeks until my body became accustomed to less food and fat. Before my open
RNY, I was mentally preparing for increased seizure activity, but alas,
nothing. Not one. In addition to informing the doctors and hospital of my
seizure disorder, I told them I was "allergic" to antihistamines,
as is seems any cold medicines or allergy meds often bring seizures.
Doctor's never been able to pinpoint why. Anyway, 2 months post-op, feeling
fine. No seizures, no meds.
Good luck.

Hi, I had WLS on Nov 1, 2000. Before surgery, I was taking 1000 mg. of
tegretol per day to control my seizures. Amazingly, since surgery, I no
longer need my seizure medication also.
