Question:
It seems like the liquid diet is too carb-y for my diabetes.

I have Type II diabetes and it seems like milk and cream soups will mess up my Blood sugar. Does anyone have experience with this? What about later? I take metformin, and keep my A1c at 6 by eating less than 30 carbs daily.    — Aiya44 (posted on January 13, 2005)

Have you tried the Fruity Whey Protein or Unjury? They have 20 grams of protein and zero carbs?

No you will be surprised after a few days it will begin to change I was on the maximum dose of glucophage and actos and insulin when I went into surgery when I left the hospital I was on 1/2 dose of glucophage and within 2-3 week cutting that dose down til at 8 weeks post op was on nothing and have been on nothing but diet and exercise control for diabetes since then and have maintained HgA1c levels of 5.7 or below. If you use the Carb countdown milk products that will also help because it is much lower in carbs and sugar. But I used the Fat Free cream soups those few weeks of the full liquid diet and would melt cheese in them for added protein. Now I use designer whey protein mixed with carbcountdown milk every morning for breakfast and stick to a high protein low carb diet no breads, pastas, rices, sugars, or flours. My diet is strickly lean meat mostly fish or chicken baked, broiled, or boiled, steamed green veges and fresh fruit. Good Luck...Nancy

Aiya, Try a carb free protein drink. Try www. PROTEINFACTORY.com I use the CFM Whey protein drink which has 110 calories,0 fat, 0 carbs, extremely low sodium and 27 grams of protein!!Per SERVING!!! Use with 1 cup NF milk and you have a 36 gram protein shake. 1/2 of the daily requirement. BTW I getit sweetened with Splenda (Which has no effect on Blood sugars) you can pick your own sweetner. Good Luck, Sonja (San Diego, CA - Open RNY 9/9/04 334/282/222/215 - 150here I come!)

I have not used milk or cream soups (as soups) for 10+ yrs now. Since my doc forbids milk, we do not have a full liquid stage, as such, but some things, like split pea soup should be safe for you. Tomato soup is very high in sugar. Is it calcium or protein you are trying to get in?
