Question:
What is the difference between a distal and a proximal RNY?

I don't know the exact inches, but with the distal, the intestines are bypassed more so than with the proximal. I had the distal and was told that this was better, in that people do not gain there weight back as much. I am sorry I don't have anymore info.

My doctor told me that I just barely had a distal - he bypassed 50cm. I believe that is the cut off between the two. Julie - Lap RNY 3/17/04 - 341/272/165

I am DISTAL.......Proximal is less the 90cm cut, Distal is 90 cm to 150cm cut away.......... and the first poster was correct......DISTAL is better for the most part because it is much harder for us to regain the weight, even the 10% bounce back weight.
