Question:
I am 1 yr post-op and am breaking out in hives every morning. It started when I took

cough syrup. I have taken Benedryl and used caladryl lotion. The hives clear up each day, but return every morning. Anyone else experience this??    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on December 2, 2003)

Hives are normally a sign of an allergic reaction. Are you using a product, food, lotion, shampoo, soap on a daily basis that is different from what you used before the hives appeared. Sometimes it takes a daily diary to determine the item. A friend developed hives all over his body. Went to the doctor as it got really bad. Turns out he had switched to a new dryer sheet and it triggered the hives. Rewashed his clothes, used the old brand and hives never returned.

This happened to me once, started every day after I took a shower. The doc asked me if I had used a new laundry detergent, soap, lotion, etc., and I said no. Then after three days of misery it dawned on me that I was using the same laundry detergent, but it was now "new and improved." Once I quit using that brand I never had the problem again!

Could it be B-12? Recently I started having hives and redness (flushing) right after I took my b-12- the label did warn that the niacin content may cause this reaction and that it is harmless and will pass rather quickly-Although it is harmless- I don't enjoy the hives lol- so I've lessened the sublingual drops to only half the dropper 2 times a day and the reaction has subsided. Hope this helps! Good luck to you.

I am having the same problem! I am 4 months post-op and my hives are happening in the middle of the night while I sleep. When I wake up in the morning, after about 30 minutes, they go away. But I wake up with them all over my body and they itch like crazy! I have racked my brain trying to figure it out, but I have not started using any new soaps, detergents, fabric softeners or anything. At first, I thought it was my bed, but I went on vacation a few weeks ago and the same thing happened when I slept in the hotel bed, so obviously it is something wrong with my body. I have not called the doctor, but I am definitely interested to hear what the other responses are. The only thing I have done is take benadryl. That seems to help.

My daughter woke up with hives every morning. I took her to an allergist who tested her for allergies. Turns out she is allergic to dust mites and feathers. We got rid of the feather pillow, used an allergenic cover on her bedding and pillow and she never had another episode.

Sounds like an allergy. I had it daily for almost a year. It got so bad once I had to go to the ER because it made my face swell up like a basketball and was cutting off my breathing. I went to an allergist and have been taking allergy shots for over a year. If it's not anything new you can identify you probably need to be tested. This can be dangerous if it causes the swelling. Ice packs can help get rid of the hives and Zyrtec works well. They can get so severe they are even on your scalp. I have had them totally all over my body, even on the soles of my feet and felt like walking on sponges. It can be a horrible experience.

AS CRAZY AS THIS MAY SEEM, IT IS TRUE . My neighbor just had a severe reaction to something she has used for years! OATMEAL! they have determine the different types of oatmeal have different leavels of mold and she had a very severe reaction! her face swelled , eyes swelled and her breathing was very labored . she spent a day in the hospital and the test confirm it was due to the mold in the type of oatmeal she ate, go figure. hope you will soon narrow the problem and get some relief, but talk to your doctor and get some tests done, reactions of any type can be serious.

I have had hives many times in my life and it usually is due to an allergic reaction but it can also be due to thyroid levels being out of control. I don't know if you have a thyroid problem or not but it could be that. Good luck I know hives suck. Peggy open rny 9/20/02 -155lbs
