Question:
What size, when?

Okay, I am spending these last three weeks before my surgery fantasizing about the possibilities of what lies ahead. If I lost 100 pounds in 6 months, I will weigh 232 pounds. I am 5 foot 5 1/2 inches - what size could I be wearing at this weight? I am planning a trip to Kuaui, HI in June and wonder what size I could be wearing and whether or not I will fit in the plane seats comfortably (I have been 250+ pounds since highschool...too long ago to remember size or comfort levels). Is this possible at this weight? Will I be able to rent a Kayak and fit my butt in it - thus fufilling another fantasy? My day dreaming is the only thing getting me through these last few weeks....I just hope I am being realisitic. What do you think? Thanks!    — MissKimberly (posted on November 28, 2003)

There is a really cool Virtual Model on landsend.com You put in your weight, height, body shape, etc and it tells you what size to buy! Put in your estimated future weight and the remaining info and see what it says! HAVE FUN!!

Hi Kimberly, this is such an exciting thought isn't it. Well, here are some of my stats. I was 324 and 5'3" on surgery day. At my sixth month mark I was 234, so about 90 lbs. I felt wonderful. I lost my weight from the top down so basically I wore a smaller size up top then below. I wore a 18/20 top and a 22 bottom. If you check out my profile you can see what my body type is so you can compare. As for plane seats, you will probably still feel a little cramped but it shouldn't be impossible like it would now. Good luck in all you weight loss. Oh, BTW, my doctor said I was ahead of schedule at that point but I know of others who have lost faster.

I posted a response on the message board, but I wanted to remind that 100 pounds in 6 months is not the norm. It is the high range of loss. Average would be 80 or so.

You aren't going to have any problem fitting in that plane seat. Not that any plane seat is comfortable, no matter what your size.

That's alot to expect in six months, but, here's to hoping! I am the same height and at your proposed weight (about 20 lbs. ago) I was a 20/22. I have loads of summer clothes in those sizes, so if you find you are still losing rapidly and don't want to buy to much, contact me and we'll arrange for me to send them to you. ~Susan

I am all for having a goal in mind! Good for you girl and 100 lbs in 6 months is a reasonable expectation, lots of us have done it. Don't beat yourself up if you don't though because we all have our own metabolic issues and will lose at different rates. I had a goal to be in a size 8 by Christmas and I'm there! So you can do it. Now for your questions... I was about a size 18-20 at that weight and could fit in all the rides at six flags, so I am sure you'll be able to fit on a plane with no problem (depends on how your weight is distributed... I'm an "all over" girl, but some are bottom/top heavy). I say God bless you for having a goal in mind and don't let anything distract you.

Kimberly ~ Congratulations on your surgery! Your life is going to be better in so many ways, you can't even imagine. However, please be careful about setting up expectations for goals that you can't control. You will lose weight at your own rate, and not everyone at the same weight will wear the same size. Don't be bummed if you don't lose 100 pounds before your trip (that is on the high side of usual), and don't be upset if you don't fit into some magic size (at 232, and 5'5", I wore a 22--now at about 190, I wear mostly 16s, some 18s). I think the plane seat won't be a problem (I got to about 270 pounds before I needed an extender), but the kayak might be a problem--it's a pretty small space, and you have to be fairly agile to maneauver it. BUT, you're going to feel so much better then than now, and be able to do many, many more things than you can now. Just don't set yourself up for diappointment if you can't do everything that you want. It takes time. Enjoy your trip. It sounds fabulous!

I am also 5'5'' and started out at 366 wearing size 30 or 32. I am now down to 245 in a little less than 10 months. I know wear mostly 18/20 on the top with some 14/16 or XL depending on the maker. On the bottom, I wear a size 20 and actually fit in a size 18 the other day. Prior to the surgery, I was extremely bottom heavy. I still carry a little more in my bottom than the top, but it has shrunk more than I was expecting. As others are experiencing, I am fitting in to much smaller clothes at this weight than I had expected. But I'm grateful for it! No complaints. Good luck. Oh, and I know what you mean by fantasizing, I pre-bought some clothes on e-bay prior to my surgery and I spent many a sleepless night fantasizing about when I could wear them. I don't recommend buying too many sizes ahead of time though, because I found that as I got into that size, I often didn't like the style anymore or it was for the wrong season. Now I just stay 1 size ahead of myself. Whatever size I fit in, I start buying the next size down. Garage sales and e-bay are great for this, I also watch for sales. Good luck.
