Question:
Which weight did you go by?
Hi everyone. I am 19 days post-op today and I'm doing pretty well. I was just wondering which weight you went by when naming your starting weight or for calculating how much weight you've lost. I am teetering back and forth trying to figure out if I should use my pre-op, before going to the hospital weight of 320, or if I should be using my highest in hospital weight of 332. What do you guys think? When people ask me how much weight I've lost, I don't know whether to say 22 pounds or 34 pounds (I'm now 298). Any input? — kristynush (posted on October 7, 2003)

I have a similar concern. My surgeon required a 10% loss pre-op. I lost
27#. I have lost 113 since surgery for a total of 140. I tell people I have
lost a total of 140#. Sometime I explain but most of the time not. I lost
it so I have the right to claim it. In fact at one time I weighed 307 so I
could add another 8 pounds.

If you put weight on in the hospital, I would not count that. The weight
was probably just fluid retention. In your case I would use my pre-op
weight. When I went into the hospital I was 283, but my highest was 293. I
count my pre-op weight because the surgery didn't help me to lose the
10lbs, and most people are interested in how much the surgery has helped me
to lose.

I gained 14 pounds of fluid in the hospital but I do not count it. Your
preop weight is what you weighed before surgery. That said I did have to do
a 2 week diet prior to my surgery and I lost 11 pounds. They were the
toughest 11 pounds I have lost so far and you're darn tootin' I count them.
I WAS 277 before surgery (my highest weight ever) and that did not change
just because I lost 11 before the actual day. I was 277 on January 1st and
had surgery on the 15th at 266. I have lost a total of 114 pounds either
way and I am proud of every pound lost. Continued success to you! :)

I was weighed the morning of my surgery at the hospital. I always say that
I have lost 98 pounds since surgery, and 105 since my first consult. This
way I am covered!!

To be "fair" I should think whatever you weighed right before you
had surgery (or the nearest weigh-in you had prior to surgery). Fluid you
gain in hospital doesn't count and what you weighed (for example) three
months prior but lost on your own really doesn't count IF you are wanting
to give an accurate accounting of what WLS has done for you. But since
it's VERY personal...whatever weight you feel is right will BE right :>)

I used the weight that they gave me on the day I went to the hospital for
surgery.

Hi there! My Dr and I have differing opinions on my starting weight. I am
using my highest weight which was reached right before surgery, that was
306. My Dr uses the weight the morning of surgery, that was 299. So its
close either way, but I really like to say and hear that I've lost 117#
pounds...currently 189!!! Yeah me! Congratulations to you also!! Sounds
like you are well on your way!!

I go by my highest weight ever which was 319 lbs. I was around 314 when I
saw the dietician a month before surgery. I lost quite a bit of weight that
month although I last suppered to death. So my offical surgery weight was
305. But I count ALL my weight as I worked hard to lose it so I'm not
cheating myself out of it. :)

I use the weight from my pre-surgery appointment (the day before surgery)
which was 313. I did get weighted in when I checked into the hospital the
next day, but they TOTALLY had my weight wrong!! On my chart, they had down
that I weighted 340 something!! There was NO way I gained 30 pounds over
night.. especially when I hardly ate at all that day (nurves), and nothing
at 5 pm!

I used the weight on my home scale the morning of surgery. Use the weight
that you took closest to your surgery. If the in hospital weight was after
surgery when you were filled with fluids, I would not use that.

I go by my weight from my pre-op testing (a couple of days before surgrey).
There was a scheduling conflict with my dr. so I did not go to his office
for a pre-op appointment which is customary. They have my starting weight
at 240, but that was taken TWO MONTHS before I had surgery. I weighed 250
on the hospital scale right before surgery. So come my one year check-up
the lady in the office has my official weight loss at 76 pounds when it
should have been 86 pounds. I didn't even try to get into it with her....
