Question:
Why do I have incision swelling at 5 weeks post op?

Last week the top part of my incision(about half) started swelling and became more painful than it had recently. Now, instead of being flush with the skin, it is raised and redder than it was before. Why did this happen? Will the puffiness go down?    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on September 25, 2003)

Could be sutures trying to work their way out and irritating the area.....I'm almost 4 months out and I've had a few do that.I put neosporin and a bandaid on it and it usually clears up...Or it could be scar tissue building up or an infection. If it continues I would check with your doc.

Terri, you could have an infection or possibly an abcess. Go see your doctor. I had an abcess in my left calf last year with the same symptoms. I was operated on twice, two hospital stays from the ER, IV antibiotics (strongest that hospital carried)and 1 1/2 years later, my wound just closed last week. Not to scare you but better to be safe.

I had a terrible problem with sutures working their way to the surface. It scared me at first but when they told me what was going on, I just let nature take it's course. Eventually the sutures made it out and the wound healed fine. Just make sure it's nothing more than that before not being concerned about it--have it checked.

The top of my incision is still swollen and red and I am 2/12 months postop. The rest has not bothered me for a long time. The top has been sore from day one. My doctor says it is normal and will go away in time. You had a lot done right in that area when you think about it. I think it is your body's way of healing from the trauma. It is always best to check with your own doctor though.

You might try to put vitamin E over your incision site as well as increase your protein to help with the healing process. That is what my doctor told me. Hope your feeling better soon. Janice

Watch your incision carefully. If it starts any new drainage or you develop a fever, you need to see your doctor as you probably have an infection. But otherwise, the others are probably right and you will just have to live through the discomfort. Take care of yourself and don't be afraid to talk to your doctor.
