Question:
Has anyone had BCBS of MN (traditional) approved them for surgery in MI
I live in Michigan, but my employer is based in Minnesota and we have BCBS of MN. How is insurance handled from one state to another? — patti L. (posted on April 15, 2003)

Patti, I live in Iowa and have BC/BS of MN and am having surgery in IL. I
have the PPO plan. From how I understand it, each state contracts directly
with the doctors in that state. and each state's BC/BS works with hte other
states.
Once I see a doctor in the PPO network (in this case IL) the doctor's
office send the claim to the BC/BS of IL company, who in turn can tell by
my group ID that I am a BC/BS of MN customer. They then send the claim to
MN for processing. I don't know if this will help since you stated you had
a traditional plan. - Janine

Patti, I live in Alabama and work for a company that is based in MN. I
have BCBS OF MN and BCBS of Alabama administers the policy for BCBS of MN.
I just got approved for surgery. My surgery date is May 16. Hope this
helps you. If I can be of any help, plese let me know.

I have BCBS MN PPO. I had surgery on the 4th in Ohio. I understand the
precertification takes places in MN but the contracting of network
doctors/hospitals is handled by the local BCBS affiliate.
I must say the customer service was the best of any insurance company I
have worked with. Only down side was that it took nearly 3 weeks after
approval for the letter to arrive.
