Question:
How long will I be off work?

Hello All, I am starting to plan the time I will be off of work. My boss has asked me to find out how long I may be out of work. Can anyone give me some type of idea? Thanks for any help you can give, it is greatly appreciated.    — Cathy B. (posted on March 15, 2003)

I had a Lap RNY and was out of work for 3 weeks. I went back (teachin) a little tired the first week, but I managed. I feel pretty much back to normal now. Good luck!

That totally depends on what type of surgery you're having. I had open RNY and I've been approved for 6 weeks of short term disability. Could have gone back after 3-4 weeks, if I had to.

I had open VBG, and I was back at work in 2 weeks. All I do is sit at a desk all day. I was tired, but not in pain. I would suggest a minimum of 2 weeks and a max of however much you can get.

It depends on the type of surgery and your occupation. I had an open rny and was out for 2 weeks. Try to consider what level of pain that you'll have and how you'll react to it.

I was off 4 weeks after Open RNY. I did half day's on my fifth week and full days on my sixth week (which was last week!). I probably could have done the half week on the fourth week because by then I was going stir crazy at home. BTW I have a desk job, so your decision to go back depends on the job you do! Good Luck!

I do office work...at desk 100% of day. I had lap surgery on a Friday and went back to work Monday morning. I only missed 1 day of work.

I had open RNY and went back to work part time week 5 and full time week 6 post op. I was tired but did fine. If you can get six weeks off, my two cents says take it. Not just to increase your physical stamina but to allow enough time to adjust to a new routine of eating & exercise, and it allows you time to begin establishing new habits before you are faced with work and old habits associated with work. Best wishes.

I was 55 years old when I had my open RNY. I weighed 346 pounds and have terrible arthritis in my knees. I was off work 2 weeks and went back full time with no problems. In fact, I was going nuts sitting around the house. I was tired at the end of the day but came home, took a short nap and then got up til bedtime.

I had Open RNY and I went back after two weeks. I was ready to go back after one week though :) I sit at a desk all day though, so I would say that you should gage it more on what kind of work you do, because it will obviously be different if you're on your feet all day verses sitting.
