Question:
Eating solids instead of pureed foods, is that ok?

I looked through the library and didn't find what I was looking for. I am supposed to be on pureed foods (10 days post op.) I was wondering if it is ok to chew chew chew and chew some more instead of pureeing foods. When I chew and chew and chew it feels like it is about the consistancy of applesauce. Is there any reason I should puree food? Everything is going down very well. I would call my surgeons office, but I call them so much already. Not only that, but it seems to me that the people on this site know as much if not more than my Dr. ;-)    — Amber F. (posted on January 9, 2003)

I did the same thing! I ran the food processor a few times, and then realized when I chew, chew, and chew some more, it's the SAME consistency. When in doubt, call the doctor, but from one new post-op to another, it seems like this is fine. Just don't forget, and swallow a big bite of anything. That wouldn't be good. :)

The only method of pureeing I used was with my teeth, from day 2 on.

I, too, skipped the pureed stage. Just couldn't stomach the thought of pureeing white fish. YUK! But I did do mostly soft foods during the puree stage, though.

Depends on what your doctor says. I was on solids 7 days after surgery. I was on liquids 5 days after going home, then started lean meat and green veggies

Not to be repetitive, but I stayed on pureed food for about 2 weeks, which was all I could stand. I made sure I chewed everything really well and I was fine. I still can't look at a box of Cream of Wheat without cringing...

I ALSO DID THE SAME THING I TRIED TO PUREE MY FOOD BUT THAT ONLY LASTED A FEW DAYS THEN I JUST CHEWED EVERYTHING TO DEATH!! I SAY IF YOU CAN EAT YOUR FOOD WITHOUT IT BOTHERING YOUR STOMACH THEN WHY PUREE IT

From day eight on I was to eat pureed foods... but things tasted and smelled bad enough without doing that. So I ate regular foods but chewed them until they were liquid. It takes alot of discipline NOT to swallow early. But if you can do it then I doubt there would be any problem.

I couldn't handle the puree phase either and my surgeon wants us to be on it for SIX WEEKS! I chewed and chewed and chewed some more. Only thing is I had a big problem with meats getting stuck, especially chicken so be careful. It hurts like a mutha! Good luck to you!!!...Karen (lap rny- 9/20/02- down 98 pounds!)
