Question:
Am I the only one that wakes up with major dry mouth in the morning?

When I wake up in the morning my mouth is so dry I can't even swallow. I keep water on my night stand and sip it through the night. What up with the dry mouth?    — joann B. (posted on January 8, 2003)

One of the classic signs of sleep apnea. Talk to your doctor about it.

I have had sleep apnea and been on a CPAP machine for 10 years and, until I had this surgery, I have never had dry mouth to the extent that I have it now. Before someone says anything about a chin strap, I don't need one because I don't sleep with my mouth on - at least since I have been on my CPAP...JR (open RNY 07/17 -139 pounds)

I had a very dry mouth and awful breath for the first month or so. It gets much much better! I was told that is can take up to 4 weeks for the meds and anesthesia to get out of your system and this is one of the effects. Make sure you keep yourself hydrated! Ketosis also plays a part in this (that's where the bad breath comes in...YUCK!!) I remember brushing my teeth like a mad woman and nothing would help. I was a Dental Hygienist prior to entering corporate America so you can imagine my sensitivity in this area! I was at a loss, but it just eventually went away...THANK GOD! :-)

I do not have sleep apnea, was tested in sept. I do wake up with a very dry mouth, not just in the morning but during the night. I keep a 24 oz pull top bottle at my bed side and sip from it. I am 11 wks out. I have also heard that excessive thirst is a symptom of diabetis and I tested negitive for that.

My mouth gets dry at night too. I keep water by the bed and sip during the night. I get enough fluids during the day, so that's not the problem. I don't have sleep apnea. I also have a problem with the bad breath in the morning. I can't wait to get up and brush my teeth. I'm 5 weeks out, RNY.

Joann, I STILL have this problem (I'm 15 weeks post op) and we probably will for a long while if not for the rest of our lives. We are just getting dehydrated. I keep a big insulated cup (with a lid) on my nightstand and when I get up in the morning, its still cold!!

I have this problem and I am 26 months post. I finally went to the doctor cause it was getting so bad I felt like I was choking from being so dry; and my lips were starting to crack. Doctor is NOT sure what the problem is, but thinks it may be because my Iron/B12 is low. He has me on Iron 3 times a day. The increase in iron seems to have helped a little bit, but its still too soon to say if the low Iron is really the cause.
