Question:
Is venison meat good for you and how much?
My dh got two deer this year and we had it made into bologna, jerkey and snack sticks, and all I do is keep eating it. My thought is that it is PROTEIN and I need that. But how much is too much? I haven't got sick on it yet and I like to snack on it during the day. I am three months out and for the past 2 weeks I haven't lost any :( but I did lose 53 lbs so far. I jsut wondered if eating to much of that is causing me not to lose weight. — Robin A. (posted on December 9, 2002)

as far as i know venison is a very lean meat and should be a good choice
for your protein. My dad and son also hunt and we always have lots of
venison around. I'm pretty sure I have seen it on the same list as chicken
breasts etc.

According to the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State University,
Venison is extrememly healthful!! In 3.5 oz. serving, there is just 2% fat
and 153 calories. Plus, an extremely good amount of iron. Compare that to
ground beef that has between 5 - 30% fat.
Game meat is usually a very good choice for nutrition. Instead of being
raised in pens and being fed chemicals, these animals are muscular and fit
from being out in the wild. Kudo's on your choice!!

As far as I know, Venison is a good healthy choice. However, if the jerky
or snack sticks have been flavored, they could be full of sodium which
could cause you to retain water. Although this could be the case, it could
just be that you hit your first plateau. I wish you much luck. Keep up
the good work.

Venison is the same as any other meat, beef, chicken, pork, etc. All meats
have 7 grams of protein per ounce. But venison is very lean meat. The ways
you had it prepared have all had a lot of salt added, you may be retaining
fluid. Anyway, if you are not losing, I wouldn't think that it is the
venison......

What do you mean by snacking on it during the day? Are you eating a little
bit 2-3 times and then eating 3 meals or are you grazing? For me, I didn't
snack during the first 6 months and then my nutritionist advised me to eat
3 'meals' and 3 snacks. The snacks should be less volume than a meal and
mostly protein, in which case, the jerky and snack sticks should be fine.
Does the bologna have any fillers or fat added? That, along with flavoring
that contain sodium could hurt your progress. Just be careful not to
graze. BYW, 53 lbs is something to be very proud of...are you exercising
yet? If not, it's a great time to start...Good luck and congratulations.
