Question:
5 months post op, 15 weeks pregnant, Not able to eat anything
I posted here once before, when I found out when I was pregnant. My surgeon told me it was ok, however for a month and a half, I have not been able to keep down any food or vitimins. Basically, my morning sickness phase should be over correct? Forget about protein-thats what my body HATES!!! I thow up my vitimins, anything. The only thing I can slide down is cocoa pebbles cereal with Lactaid milk and egg protein powder. Sometimes a half of banana. But, anything I drink is also making me sick. I cant keep anything down. My OB says "dont worry the baby will be fine even if you dont eat a single thing until birth" But what about me? Any suggestions??? Thank you all so much!!! — hrussinko (posted on November 18, 2002)

Heather, I am no expert on pregnancy, but it doesn't sound right for your
doctor to say that you and the baby will be fine even if don't eat a single
thing until birth. I know that some other women who were early post-ops
and were pregnant were seeing high risk pregnancy specialists because of
the fact that early post-op you are not getting in enough food. You may
want to check this out. Get a 2nd opinion, please.

wow, maybe you might be fine if you do not eat a thing, but not drinking is
definately a problem. I agree with Cindy, get a second opinion.

Howdy Heather! =D I don't have personal expirence, but my mother had a
similar situation when she was pregnant with my sister. Her gall bladder
had gone out about 2 months into the pregnancy and this was way back when
they still opened you WAY up to get it out. The only thing that she could
tolerate was jello throughout the whole thing. Vitamins never stayed
down...nothing. She got to be very weak, very anemic, and very
malnourished by the time little Jenny came into the world. And Jen was
very under developed. Her digestive tract wasn't complete and she was in
the hospital for a few months until she caught up. (she was a full term
baby too) My mom never went to a high-risk OB but, really wishes she did.
I'd say go to another doc. Maybe there is a shot or something they can
give to you to help you out? No idea..just kind of throwing out
ideas...but I wish you the best of luck dearie! I hope all is well with
you and Alex and I hope this turns out well for you too. email if you need
me! HUGS

I second the suggestion of getting a 2nd opinion.....during the first
and/or second trimester, you actually need to increase fat intake since
this is very important for the baby's neurological development. I'd check
with a dietician.

I am 16 weeks, and let me tell you my food adversion is very bad right now.
I can order dinner out and when it arrives, I won't (can't) touch it. I
am living on ff yogurt & string cheese! So food sickness can definitly
still happen into your second trimester. As for "the baby will be
fine" from your Doctor, I do believe this is incorrect. In many baby
books I have read (when it addresses MO women concerned with gaining more
weight)that if you are heavy do not think your baby can live on your fat
stores. You need to eat. It needs nutrition. Fat stores are not
nutritious, in fact they are toxic. So your baby DOES need the new foods
that you can process for it. Be it your half of a banana etc or egg
protein etc. Do what you can. I know it's hard- I am there right with
you. I know sometimes the carbs are easier (but they make me feel so low)
not to mention anything with sugar (ugh- taste left in my mouth is
horrid)... fruit (oranges, bananas and apples) seem to work best for me,
then dairy, then junk food. Bad as it is, if it is the only thing I can
stomach (temporarily) that is what I am going to eat.

hi there! :) congrats on your pregnancy! :) i wish for you a very healthy
pregnancy and baby too! :) i would defenetly get a second opinion, i dont
see how you and baby would be ok if you didnt eat a thing the entire
pregnancy. sounds a little off to me. so please get another opinion. i
realize with wls there are certain foods we all need to trt to stay away
from but being that you are pregnant and you and baby will need the
nutrition id say try things and whatever stays down, eat it! :) theres
always after the baby where youll be able to go back to the low carb low
sugar thing etc. for now just eat what agrees with you and will stay
down.best of luck to you and i hope your morning sickness passes soon for
you :)

I dont know what type of WLS you had but if your surgeon was looking out
for your best interest and the iterest of your child he would of made sure
to advise you to wait 18 to 24 months before pregnancy. My surgeon and
many others that I know of strongly suggest you wait. You will not be able
to absorbe the nutrients for you so early on in the post op phase of
surgery let alone for you and a fetus. I am 24 yrs old and had surgery 4
months ago and was well informed of the problems of pregnancy. I was well
educated and I always use protection or abstinence. I will be getting
married next october and the doctor said after that would be a good time to
concieve because my stomache will be able to hold more food and I will be
able to retain the nutrients for me and my child. I wish you the best on
you up and coming pregnancy and hope everything works out for the best but
please take care of yourself and the fetus.

When I had my son, I had no "morning sickness" until about 12
weeks. For the next 6 weeks I couldn't keep anything down at all and was
losing weight. Meat and anything with fat were particuarily offensive.
One night I had horrible pain in my upper right quadrant and around to the
lower part of my righ shoulder blade. A trip to the ER and a sonogram of
my gall bladder confirmed that all these symptoms were due to a diseased
gall bladder. They removed it two weeks later and I was immediately much,
much better. Both I and my son are now fine. Rapid weight loss, hormones,
pregnancy, and being female are all predispositions of gall bladder
disease. Have them check it out. My PCP kept telling me it was morning
sickness and don't worry but even doctors can be wrong.

COME ON!!! HELLO PEOPLE this girl is preg, and wants help, the LAST thing
in the world anyone should be saying is she should have waited to get
preg!! That is terrible!! I'm so sorry for these insensitive people. I
don't have any advise for you, but I wish you and your baby all the best.
When I was pg with my son, I had morning sickness the entire time, I threw
up everything, it was before my surgery, but my son was fine! Good luck

Heather, dont take any chances with yourself or this little one. Find an
OB that specializes in high risk pregnancys. You have one. As for your
doc saying you can go the whole time w/o eating and the baby being
fine....maybe so, but do you want to take that chance? With both of my
children I was sick the entire pregnancy. So sick in fact that I was
admited to the hospital. The only thing at the time they could give to
help was sleeping pills. It had a side effect of anti-nausia. But being
stoned all the time was not my ideal so i quit taking them after a few
days. With my second child, someone suggested eating star mints when I
fealt sick. (you know, the red and white pepermint candies) This helped
tremendously with the morning sickness. Maybe you can find a sugar free
version of these. I have told many people about this and they all have
said it helped. Keep trying to eat, if only a little of it gets in before
it comes back up you are helping. Best of luck to you.

Heather,
I would agree with the other posters and strongly suggest you get a new OB
that specializes in High Risk pregnancy TODAY! It is not healthy for you or
your baby for you not to eat or drink. You both will suffer. Get a new
doctor now!! And get into him asap.
Great wishes to you and your new little one! Children are the greatest of
all Gods blessings!

I just wanted to give my two cents on this one --- I have had two children
and was sick throughout the ENTIRE pregnancy - that is almost 10 months of
not keeping anything down. My OB regularly gave me IV fluids, that baby
and you need that much to at least survive and I am not a post-op so if I
needed the fluids, honey I am sure you need them too. For my first one I
didnt have a high risk OB and I still had the extra fluids. Never did keep
those vitamins down and I couldnt have asked for more healthy children.
hope this helps to know you have hope even if you dont get to eat for the
next several months! :)

There was a lady in the hospital the same time as me when I had my surgery.
She was preg and 9 mos post op. She delivered very early and the babies
were malnourished, as well as she herself. The dr. that worked with me,
AND the dietician said she should have been on TPN throughout her pregnancy
and she was even holding down food. TPN is a full days food but done
intraveneously. They can make sure you get plenty of calories AND
nutrients for you and your baby. Don't you dare let that dr. brush you
off. Your health and maybe life depends on it!!! May the Lord bless
you....and Congrats!!
