Question:
Are you still diabetic even if blood sugars are normal?

Hello... My husband is/was diabetic... sugars are non-diabetic normal (fasting 90 post-meal 138).. A1C is 6.2 no meds.. no nothing.. are you still a diabetic then?    — Allie A. (posted on September 5, 2002)

Wow, what a good question!! Well, his A1c is still slightly elevated, so he would be boarderline. And depending on how long he had diabetes, the effects of the diabetes on his body is questionable. My suggestion ( as a nurse who has worked with diabetics for years) is for your husband to continue to follow a diabetic diet, to keep that blood sugar undor control and prevent it from coming back. If he has had this surgery (which I am assuming that he has), it will help with this process. You may want to check in with the doc to see what he says. But that is my 2 cents!!

Being diabetic for 25 years and also being a nurse, It's my understanding that there is no "cure" for Diabetes. However, it sounds like your husbands blood sugar is well under control. He will always be diabetic, but by following the proper diet, he should be able to keep his blood sugars within the normal range. He should still keep track of them with a glucometer and get his A1C checked about every 6 months. This is what my doc told me. After having the RNY, 11 months after surgery, I am now completely off insulin and take no oral antidiabetic meds. Hope this helps.

I believe once a diabetic always a diabetic. It's something akin to being an alcoholic - even when you're in remission or "on the wagon", there's always the chance you'll fall off. In the case of diabetes, going off medication and having blood sugar within normal limits is the best thing that can happen to you, but you'll always have the possibility of your glucose going up again. Your husband has done the best thing he can do, which is lose the weight and exercise. Don't get caught up in the semantics of whether or not he's still technically a diabetic, as long as he keeps with the program.
