Question:
Anyone with PCOS have/ unable to have babies after WLS

My husband and I have been told we can't have children due to his infertility issues as well as my PCOS. Was wondering if any of you lovely ladies have/had PCOS and became pregnant after weight loss surgery.. Would also like to hear from those who couldn't get PG after too! Just wondering about stats of women with PCOS concieving.. not really looking forward to more infertiliy treatments.. seriously considering adoption, but husband wants our "OWN" .. jut wondering how likely that would be....I have absence of periods and heavy bleeding for months.. which I control through birth control.. NO OVULATION WHAT SO EVER!!! THANKS!!!    — Allie A. (posted on July 10, 2002)

Hi Allie. I too have PCOS and am pretty sure I have had it for at least 10 years. I am pre-op, but I have had a child since having PCOS (almost 4 years ago) even though I was told that I could not get pregnant on my own (without possible fertility drugs). Like I said, I am pre so I do not know the affects after surgery, but I have seen at least two women's profiles stating they could not get pregnant for many years and were able to after surgery (not sure if they had PCOS though). I hope you get positive responses. Best of luck Sweetie!

Hi, I have PCOS and was able to have a child three years ago using Clomid...I am about to undergo WLS next month, but have not attempted pregnancy. Clomid can get more expensive if you end up having to use a very high dose (250mg) like I did, but is one route to consider to help you ovulate and then have a blood test (day 21 progesterone) every month to see if that dose is working for you and you are ovulating, if not the dose of Clomid would be increased.

Allie- how far out are you? Your site says post-op, yet nothing else. I immediately got my period the day after surgery- now, I know most of us do (PCOS or not) however, it has remained as clockwork since (2 yrs.), so I ASSUME I am ovulating. Husband and myself are currently TTC (but we also realized we must actually HAVE SEX in order for conception :) he he - he works nights!), still we have only been at it since December. Endo suggested at least a year, and then start what you've already been through (although we just may forget the whole thing). Any how, as soon as I get knocked up- I will update my site.

I was dx with PCOS when I was trying to become pregnant. I had triplets as a result of pergonal. When the boys were 8 months old, I began to take Redux and lost 25 pounds. I went in to the dr to get the wonderful provera and the pregnancy test was positive. I was shocked. They told me I'd have to use treatments again. The doctor said that my PCOS was highly sensitive to weight loss. Due to the loss, I had a cycle. I would assume that the WLS would have the same effect on fertility. Hope this helps, Becky

There is hope out there. I was diagnosed with PCOS 3 years ago. I was told I would have to take something to help with contraception also. They said the only way to even help with contraception was to lose a major amount of weight. I was on the lower end of the scale (5'4, 256), so I opted to get gastric bypass surgery. I am currently a year and a half out and 7 months pregnant. I shouldn't have got pregnant so soon, but I honestly didn't think it would happen. The weight loss does help so much. I just wanted you all to know that there is hope out there.
