Question:
I am confused. Is it true that having untreated cavities during surgery
can cause heart distress? I thought I read somewhere in the database that having cavities during surgery is dangerous to your heart. Is that true? A myth or wive's tale? Thanks. — Lily C. (posted on June 16, 2002)

Well, I can't tell you if it's a myth or not but I can tell you that I have
a couple cavities that I haven't had time to get fixed yet, and they were
there during surgery. No problems. I suppose if you have an infection in
there, though, that might cause some problems, but I really don't know.

I am a Registered Nurse for the past 8 years and can tell you that
untreated cavities or any infection involving the teeth can lead to
bacterial endocarditis, which is a very serious condition. It can lead to
eventual heart failure. It is because of this condition that many dentists
give their patients antibiotics for a few days before dental procedures. I
would check with your primary physician, your surgeon, and your dentist
before going under and type of surgery.
