Just prior to surgery, while you are asleep, they insert it either in your neck or groin, and thread it up to about where your rib cage is. I felt nothing! And still don't! August 13, 2001 270/176

Hi Sandra.... I had the vena cava filter and was nervous prior to having the procedure done. But it was a piece of cake. I went to hosp. day before surgery, had a hand IV started, was given light sedation but I remember talking to OR staff a lot and remember nothing of pain. It took about an hour and at the same time (on me at least) they put in a central line in my upper shoulder so on surgery day they just plugged in the IV and I was off. What it did is remove serious risk of blood clots going to the lungs/heart/brain. You can still get clots but they lodge in this filter and hence can be dissolved. If your Dr. is suggesting this go for it as it removes a major risk of this surgery. Good luck to you!
