Question:
does cold water bother anyone else?
I can drink anything cold out of the refrigerator, ice tea, milk, juice with no problem but if I drink cold water it hurts my pouch. Anyone else experience this?? I HATE warm water so that's not an option. — Kim B. (posted on April 5, 2002)

I am 10 months out and since I got on the soft-foods diet water has been a
problem for me. I tried warm water with lemon and still have problems
getting it down. I don't know what it is: I can drink other stuff fine but
water makes my pouch seize up and cramp. Once I took a couple of sips of
water at a restaurant and couldn't eat my meal because of the cramping!
This continues to be a problem for me, so this is mostly a "you're not
alone" answer but a couple of things are helpful for me. Try drinking
SF lemonade or koolaid. Those go down easier for me. Also I sometimes get
those koolaid-type protein drinks (zero carb isopure or extreme pure pro)
and mix them with water and ice--they go down fine. Also, I sometimes fill
a cup to within an inch of the top with water and ice then add fruit
juice--I like grape or cranberry--to the top. Before surgery I would have
thought extremely watered down juice was gross, but now it tastes good!
Hope this helps. I still struggle every day to make even half my water
intake. Unfortunately I have no problems drinking coffee! =(

Hi Kim- I am almost 15 mo post op & I have the same issue. I keep all
my water at room temp. Sometimes other drinks bother me (cold) as well. I like diet snapple pink
lemonade- but that too needs to be at room temp. My surgeon told me the
sensation will go away- that was several months ago, so go figure! Hot
drinks don't bother me at all. Good luck

Looks like we're in the same boat!! I am four weeks post-op and also
noticed my pouch doing flip-flops after sipping cold water. Like you, it doesn't happen
with any other beverages, so I've just accepted it and decided to drink
water at room temp. Let me know if you find a better alternative!! ~

I'm SO glad you asked this question! I thought I was the only person who
ever had this problem. I'm 17 months post op and still have issues with
cold water. I can drink other
things like crystal lite, tea, kool ade, etc. but the water is a killer for
me. The only difference is that I can't tolerate water, not because it
makes my stomach cramp, but because it makes me nauseous. Go figure that I
can eat buffalo wings with no trouble but water will make me sick as a dog.
Wonder what the problem is..... Good luck to you - I sure hope someone
comes up with an answer!

Ypu. I don't drink anything BUT water...and I can't handle it too cold. It either hurts my pouch or gives
me a cramp in my bowels. I try to think ahead and fill my bottle an hour
before drinking, or I mix a little hot with the cold to bring it to room temp.

I am about 5 weeks post-op and have nausea when drinking plain water, cold is worse but lukewarm bothers me too.
Juice, milk and about any other liquid I have tried is ok, just problems
with plain water. Doctor said that this is somewhat normal and that it may
go away with time.
But from what I understand, it may have something to do with plain water
not being isotonic. Kind of the same reason why plain water can iratate
your eyes, but by adding salt to make a saline solution, such as contact
lens solution, it will not irratate your eyes. By the same principal, by
adding something to the water, it makes it more tolerable.
I have found that I do pretty good with Sam's Choice bottled water (from
Wal-mart). It is a mineral water and has several minerals added to it. It
doesn't seem to bother me as much as tap water or other types of bottled
water. You may want to give it a try.

Try drinking "Distilled Water". Its the purest drinking water on
this earth. Its pure H20!!! Believe me there is a difference. Bottle water
is as bad as tap water! Thats why distilled water is the only water my
family drinks! I have never had any stomach problems from drinking my water
either. Its the best tasting water too. I truly believe that is why my
cholestrol is 99 for the last 7 years because of the distilled water!! It
leaves no mineral desposit in your artieries. Word of caution to everyone!!
If you think you are drinking good water from a bottle you will be in for a
surprise of your life. Those bottle water companys are not Federally
regualated and most are worse than tap water!!! Tap water has arsenic in it
too!! You wouldn't believe all the chemicals they put in our water!!Thats
why I buy Distilled Water. Walmart carries it the cheapest but I order my
water from Arrowhead. Even my delivery guy asked me why I drink distilled
water so I educated him real fast. We all have to take real good care of
our bodies by eating right, taking the right vitamins, and more importantly
drinking the safest and purest water!!!! Best of luck and I hope everything
gets better and it will too!!

You know...I tried drinking distilled water and couldn't STAND the taste of
it. For some reason it tastes very metalic to me. I've even tried
different brands of distilled water....still yuck.<p>
I too had problems with drinking cold water in the beginning. I could
drink cold Crystal Lite all day but
cold water caused my stomach to
cramp. I found if I put even just a splash of juice in it it seemed to
help. Now, 3 months out...I don't seem to have that problem. Try a little
juice and see if it helps you...
