Question:
Are panniculectomies always necessary,?
I was wondering, if you already have a large pannus prior to having surgery, or weight loss, do you always have to have a panniculectomy after? Or, Do many people just get a tummy tuck? I don't know the difference. — Michelle H. (posted on March 4, 2002)

A panniculectomy removes the excess apron. A tummy tuck removes the excess
skin, goes a little higher, like below the breasts and tightens the muscles
that lie underneath as well. The panni removes that same fat and some
surgeons go high up, others just deal with the area from belly button down
on the panni. Pannis and tummy tucks can be covered by ins, depending on
who you have. Some say it is easier to get a panni approved because it is
often considered less cosmetic, but often tummy tucks are approved as well.
If you already have a big apron pre-op you will definitely need some work
post op. Good luck!
